Alex looked at the receptionist and said: “Hi. I’m Alex, the new Chief Engineer. Here for a standard boarding physical. Do I need an appointment?”

“Not at all. Please wait one moment and I will get a nurse.” The receptionist pressed a button on her console and less than a minute later a Vulcan of indeterminate age approached. “I am Nurse J’tnal. Please follow me.” He led Winters to a biobed. “Your name Lt?” He flipped on the biobed and paused, waiting for the name to pull up the medical file.

Alex followed. She liked Vulcans as medics. They were efficient. “Alex Winters, Chief Engineer,” she said as she hopped up onto the biobed the nurse had indicated. “Do your worst.”

Jt’nal raised a brow without looking away from the screen as he typed in the name, “That would imminently unwise, and go against all codes of medical ethics to ‘do my worst’. Dr. Kane will be with you in a moment.”

Alex smiled. Vulcans. Of course. She should have known. “I apologize for my imprecise language. I thought you were going to be performing my boarding physical. It was a poor attempt at a joke.”

The nurse walked away and spoke to a woman who looked far too young to have Lt. Cmdr pips on her blue uniform. She took a PaDD from the nurse, glanced over it, nodded, and then approached the bed. “Lt. Winters. I’m Dr. Kane. It seems your complete medical file did not arrive with your personnel file.” She pulled out her tricorder and removed the hand scanner and began running it over him. “Any chronic illnesses or injuries?”

Alex shrugged. “None that I know of, depending on your definition. I broke my left elbow when I was ten. Doctors, technicians and nurses all over the Fleet have been telling me that it didn’t heal as well as could have been expected, had we had access to standard treatment options for broken bones at the time. But I came from a place that didn’t believe in modern medicine.” Alex touched the elbow briefly.

“No harm done, though. I still have full range of motion, and it only hurts a bit when it’s freezing outside, which doesn’t happen much on climate controlled starships.”

Kane scanned the elbow and looked at it, “No it didn’t. We can repair that. Does it give you chronic or intermittent pain?”

“Flex, extend, and rotate your elbow, please.”

“The pain is intermittent and, at this point, mostly sporadic, unless I go looking for ways to aggravate it.” Alex said, then did as she was told. Flexion and extension gave her no trouble at all. A pang that she could only describe as reminiscent of a tiny electrical shock shot through her elbow, up to her shoulder and down her lower arm as she made the rotating motion. For just a fraction of a second, she stopped breathing. Then she exhaled, slowly and deliberately.

She looked at the doctor and smiled. “Like when I do that. At the Academy, I was told during my pre-comm physical that it wasn’t a disqualifying condition given my range of motion, and that if I wanted to have it fixed, I’d be on light duty and with limited range of motion for anywhere up to a week. At the time, I was a division 1 soccer player. I wasn’t about to miss the final game of the season to have an elective medical procedure. After that, final exams, then graduation, and then I was lucky enough to be assigned a first duty station within three days. My boss there wasn’t the kind of guy who would have looked favorably on a new recruit choosing to go on light duty for even a day so, well … I guess the right time just never presented itself.”
