She grinned but shyness crept into her expression as she lifted a small round savoury tart. It was soft but set and she realized it was made with eggs. A mini quiche? She smelt it first. “Mmm, pastry. I can smell the butter,” Cori said, her eyes lighting up. She took a tentative bite. There was onion in it and was that ham? Cheese. It all but melted in her mouth. “Okay, this is good, you should try one.”

Royal did as bidden and picked up the quiche and popped it in his mouth. He chewed and smiled and, after finishing it, said “Okay… I’m glad you like that because I do to. We can have that anytime you like.”

Royal

She chuckled. “It’s interesting to see how my memory will adapt as I go along. It seems so far that it’s better than it was, but obviously I’m no computer database.” She popped the rest of the tiny quiche into her mouth and chewed, eyeing the other options on the plate. “Okay, for fun, you pick the next thing I try.”

Royal smiled and then eyed the options. He selected a plate of two small sandwiches. He took a bite and nodded. Swallowing, he said “Barbecue pulled pork. Sweet and tangy. Just the right amount of sauce.”

Royal

She picked up the sandwich and took a tentative bite. Food was this strange experience. She was excited but also cautious. You just never knew when something would be terrible or maybe she would have a reaction she didn’t know about. No, her medical record would have listed any allergies. She let the tastes sit on her tongue for a moment before chewing and swallowing. “I like that too. It’s got a bit of a kick to it too, but it’s subtle.”

“What’s your favourite food or foods?” she asked.

~Corinne Dalton

Royal thought for a moment and then said “Well, from Earth my favorite is bangers and mash. But outside of Earth? Hmmm… I’d have to say Denobulan sea scallops.” He finished the slider and took a drink. “But you also can’t go wrong with a really good burger.” He looked down at the plethora of remaing dishes and said “Okay… your turn. What are we doing next?”

Royal

Cori eyed the options and picked up a round ball that looked like it had been deep fried. She bit into it and the yellow tinges dough was chewy and fluffy, with vegetables throughout and heavily spiced, but not hot. Her eyes widened. “Wow! I was not expecting that. It’s pretty good, but taking some getting used to,” she said with a laugh after she swallowed. She popped the rest in her mouth.

~Cori

Royal picked one up and took a bite. He smiled slightly and chewed and swallowed. “Vegetable pakora. Not bad, but not a favorite for me. We had an Indian take-away near my house in Glasgow. I have never found a pakora or paneer that comes close to theirs.”

Royal

“What sort of stuff did you eat growing up? What was the worst?” she asked before she popped another of the spiced vegetable fritter into her mouth.

~Corinne Dalton

Royal shrugged slightly. “Oh… the norm for where I lived. Potatoes, sausages, meat pies, loads of carrots and cabbages, a lot of mutton and lamb. The Scots love their meats.” and he chuckled. “Lots of bread from the bakery on the corner. Me and my seanair would go to the bakery every other day in the morning.” and he smiled at the memory. “Four loaves and a sweet treat for him and I.”
