Letting out a sigh of relief, Brad surveyed his finally-clear desk.

Personnel rota? Reviewed and approved.
Supply manifests? Signed off on.
Case notes? Initialed and filed.
Various and sundry potential medical journal articles awaiting review? Reviewed, notes added, and returned to sender.

His desk was actually clear of PaDDs for the first time in months. His vision of his office was unobstructed by mounds of machinery. And it had only taken two weeks of double shifts locked inside with the “DO NOT DISTURB” light on.

He wondered what he’d missed…

OOC: Hey, I hope this works. I’m going to set this after Dira leaves the Quarantine Bay thread and this would be before Walker shows up in the lounge thread.

Regardless of whether he wished to be disturbed or not, his door chimed.

OOC: Yeah that should be fine.

IC: “Come,” Brad said, not entirely surprised that as soon as he turned off the “DO NOT DISTURB” light there was someone wanting to talk to him.

The captain stepped in and though she gave him a smile, it was small, her mind trying to pull itself from the complicated set of variable before them. “Good day, Walker. Do you have time to talk? There’s something quite urgent we need to discuss.”

“Sure, Captain,” Brad said, a small frown on his face and a crease forming on his brow. “Has something happened?”

“You could say that,” Dira said, moving to take up one of the chairs in front of his desk.

“So… as captain sometimes I have to authorize things in a department that are slightly beyond the normal department purview, for whatever reason. This is one of those times. First off, I will understand if you are frustrated or upset and feel like you should have been included but this is highly restricted knowledge and the less people that know, the better. But I feel it’s only fair to include you since it is your department. But I will warn you that I can’t tell you everything.”

She took in a deep breath. “We have a new member of our crew. Well, she’s on our manifest and she is mulling over a return to duty when she is able. As far as the crew will know, she’s a new transfer to the science department and her backstory is her own to share. What I can tell you is that she was involved in an accident on the holodeck quite a few years ago and through some details that aren’t relevant to us now, her consciousness was trapped in the computer of the ship she served on. Two years ago, she was abducted out of the system and through some complicated situations, the Kanes, yes, our Kanes, were able to integrate her consciousness into a biological body. Her brain is synthetic, but not built. It functions seamlessly with her body and when she is scanned it will show a Human brain. And yes, I was aware of this transfer, and yes I said they could go ahead with it if this crew member was able and willing to take the risk. I did a psychological evaluation before and after the transfer, one to gauge her capacity to make that decision but also to know where her baseline was. The gist is the woman has experienced a lot of trauma, but she’s resilient and wants to serve. When she is physically able, and cleared by both Medical and Psychiatry, she will likely be back on active duty as a member of our crew.” Dira could have said more but it was a lot to process, and she watched Brad as he digested the information.

His eyebrows pinched ever closer together as her explanation proceeded, and his mouth opened and closed several times before he was able to actually articulate a reply.

“I can’t decide whether I should call him Dr. Frankenstein or Jesus. Because I’m sure this was mostly his idea.”

Dira was calm and nonplussed at Walker’s reaction. In truth, she had expected something like that. “Regardless of the method of her return, Lieutenant Corinne Dalton is going to be a member of this crew. She’s been horribly mistreated over the years and no one should have to go through what she went through. But she’s here and determined to live her life. Our job will be help her integrate into the crew and make sure her physical and mental well being is supported.”
