Dira nodded. “I for one am glad to see people stretching and trying new things. I’ll do my best to support you however I can, but if you do formally apply for the program, it will be up to you to put in the work. I’m not worried you won’t, but it will mean juggling more. It would be worth talking to Walker about this as well. There are probably ways to blend some of the training with your current duties as well.”

“I think Commander Walker would prefer to keep me locked in the surgical suites. I can only imagine, having had to deal with me professionally, what his reaction to me entering command training would be. Something requiring a visit to the psych ward most likely.”

Dira bobbed her head back and forth. “Perhaps. But the fact that you’re interested speaks to changes you’ve gone through. Even if he’s personally uncertain, he has an obligation to support your growth. And you will need his support. Consider it your first command challenge, Drake: interpersonal challenges. You have to convince a member of the senior staff to support a crew member’s shift in focus while also not having their new work interfere with their current duties,” she said, a gleam appearing in her dark eyes.
