She almost wanted to reach back and take his hand, to feel the sensation of their skin touching, but Cori didn’t. But his words echoed in her mind. You are never a burden How often had she bene made to feel the exact opposite? But the thing with Royal was that she believed him. He was the real deal and would never go out of his way to hurt her. “I haven’t really been super social yet. It’s a bit like I’ve forgotten how. But everyone was pretty nice in the lab when I’ve gone there. I need to go talk to the CSO about my return to duty and what that might look like, but mostly I’m in therapy of physio. The med staff have been really nice. And strange as everything was I kind of like the Kanes. They were honest with me, even if R&D Kane made me want to punch him when I first appeared in his lab. My being in pain did distract me from that notion. But I don’t know, I’ve grown to kind of like him.”

“He is a bit like a fungus.” Royal said with a grin. “Once he gets under your skin, you can’t get rid of him. And I completely understand the desire to punch him. I think everyone except his wife has that desire at least twice a day.” and he laughed.

“And then the captain is really nice. It’s been a mixed bag for Captain’s over the years, but I feel like I can trust her, so that’s novel. The rest? Well, I guess I’m going to have to be more social, now aren’t I? It’s just… hard because I don’t really know what to tell people. A couple questions into a normal conversation and it’ll be clear my circumstances are… odd. I’m not sure how to handle it.”

He shrugged and said “When someone asks about where you were before here, you can just say ‘I was assigned to a classified project that took up my entire life for a few years. Fascinating work, but really confining.’ I think that will satisfy most. And if it doesn’t and they try and pry… send them to the XO. I hear he is a real bastard about people minding their business.” and he grinned.

Sam returned with their drinks, setting them down with a smile. “Now, any thoughts about what you might want to eat? We’ve got some of the best replicators programs in Starfleet, and I’ve been having the crew add favourite meals from home if we can get them.”

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

Food was a strange thing for her still, but she no longer had any dietary restrictions now that her body had adjusted to the concept of eating. But decided what to eat became this whole new dilemma. An odd point of paralysis. She really should have thought of that before agreeing to dinner, and yet there was no one she trusted to be vulnerable with about odd things like that than Royal. “I’m definitely going to need a few minutes to think it over,” she said, her smile jut a tiny bit more forced than she would have liked.

Royal smiled at her and looked at Sam. “Tell you what. Can you bring us appetizer portions of… well… everything? We want to experiment and see where our palates take us.”
