Kane chuckled. “Perfect. Adrrnal response and neurological spike. F^<king fantastic.” He looked at Dalton. “Listen… there was a lot we… I… didn’t tell you. That was for our protection as well as yours. But yeah… Sinclair is our XO. And you are on the most advanced medical ship in Star Fleet.” He looked at Alexis and said “Oh. And her name is Kane, too. That’s my wife. She’s the one that built put your body that you just tried to knock to the floor.”
Kane, R&D
Cori looked between the two Kanes, wide eyed and then broke into wild laughter. She reached out and held Alexis’ hand, giving it a firm squeeze with an insistent look in her eyes. “Don’t you see, I can be broken! Isn’t it great?!” She laughed again and dropped her hand.
“Yes, but just like a new born who can die if it falls, so could you. Caution is indicated,” Alexis told her quite firmly.
“Understood,” Cori said.
Lifting her arms, Cori flexed her fingers and rubbed her hands together, marvelling at the miracle that touch was. “Holographic systems mimic sensation pretty well, but not exactly. You can feel weight and pressure, but you can’t quite feel the exertion of your body in motion. Things aren’t hard to do. Dance was easy. But to be en pointe and holding all your muscles exactly right while you balance on, well, not much, requires everything working together in the most precise way.” She flashed a grin. “And you look amazing doing it too.” She shook her head, eyes welling with tears. “Thank you! You have no idea how grateful I am, even though I’m pretty sure I’ve still not fully grasped what all of this means.”
“I have so many question! You said I have a positronic brain, but an organic body. Do I age normally? What age is my body now in actuality and will that change my possible lifespan? What if something goes wrong with my brain? Do I see a doctor? And engineer? How do I handle getting annual physicals? OMG, sex! I’m a virgin again, which is hilarious because I was most definitely not one. Wait! Will I have menstrual cycles? Can I get pregnant? That’s a good details to know.” So many questions, so many details she couldn’t grasp just yet, it was… a lot.
~Corinne Dalton
Dira couldn’t help but smile. “Take a breath, Corinne. Three of them, in fact. Long and deep. We have time to answer your questions, and you deserve to have those answers. But it’s also no good asking them if you hyperventilate.”
Captain Myqian, CO
Nodding, Dalton proceeded to take deep breaths, though it didn’t stop the flurry of thoughts.
“You will age normally. In actuality the body is only a few minutes old. As far as medical scans are concerned you are 38. Your body even shows where you have had injuries over the years. The difference is they haven’t taken a toll on the body. Your life span will be the same as any other human. If something goes horribly wrong you will need both a doctor and a scientist/engineer. Make sure they are people you trust. While you are here in Ogawa your doctors will be myself and Dr. Kane. Yes he is a doctor also. Annual physicals will be like always. Everything will read as human. You are not a virgin again. Your medical scans showed as such and your body corresponds. Yes you will have a menstrual cycle and go through menopause when it is time. You can get pregnant, but I would advise rigid medical care if you choose to do so. I don’t forsee problems, but this is uncharted territory,” the female Kane rattled off the answers to all the questions.
“Huh,” Dalton said, shaking her head. Deeper in her mind though, a complicated set of thoughts formed pertaining to a former partner of hers and the drama surrounding the daughter he hadn’t known about and then proceeded to keep secret from her after he did find out about her. Those were thoughts for later.
“Now we are going to test your nervous responses. Close your eyes and I will use this feeler,” it was a long very thin piece of plastic, “to touch your skin. You simply have to say when you feel it. Kane will monitor your brain patterns.” She proceeded to test areas of her feet, hands, arms legs, stomach, face, elbows, knees, neck, head, and so on.
Kane, AMO
Her nervous system lit up wherever the plastic touched and Cori even involuntarily giggled and demurred when it passed alongside her neck. “Ticklish spot,” she said with a grin.
Kane followed the scans along with the testing. “Perfect. Everything is exactly as it should be.” he said to the room at large. “And the scan registers as a human brain . Only way to determine it’s artificial is that you aren’t going to degrade as you age. Cognitive function will stay as is right now. So… no worries about losing your marbles and becoming a crazy cat lady, I guess.”
“Huh,” she said again.
“When can I see Royal?” Corinne asked, her tone more serious all of a sudden.
~Corinne Dalton
Kane turned and shrugged. “Medically speaking, I don’t see any reason to say no. Although you might wanna put clothes on. Seeing you in the flesh will be enough of a shock. And I don’t want to have try and pick that dude up off the deck.”
Kane, R&D
Cori gave him a wicked smile. “There are worse ways to be greeted, though that might be testing the status of our friendship a little too much, too soon.”
Alexis pulled out a pen light and flashed it across Daltin’s eyes as she spoke. “I have a few more tests I want to do before we bring other people in. And you really should understand and know your new history. When I am done, Cpt Myqian is going to perform a psychological evaluation. She is a trained and current counselor, and we are aware that Cmdr Sinclair was your counselor, but we need an unbiased evaluation.” She headed up a finger, “Just move your eyes and follow my finger.” She shinned the light to watch the change in dilation and muscle control as the eyes moved her finger.
Her eyes tacked the motion easily. “Cool, therapist captain. Haven’t had one of those before, and I’ve seen my fair share of therapists”
She grabbed a small towel and handed it to her. “Wipe your eyes. They are overly moist from the cryostasis, which isn’t bad, but you will notice as they normalize.” She was also watching for coordination as Dalton wiped her eyes.
She wiped at her eyes and blinked. “It’s been so long since I’ve had real eyes I’ve forgotten what they are like.”
She held out both hands with 2 fingers extended. “Grab and squeeze as hard as you can.” Then she had her hold her arms out and resist Alexis pusing them down, bending them, or lifting them up. She did the same with her legs and feet. Then Alexis had Corinne try to push and pull her arms. Then she tested her reflexes.
All her reflexes worked as normal, even if she struggled to push, simply because she had no strength.
“You do not have the strength or endurance you did. The muscles have never been used. It will seem like early stages atrophy to anyone else. Physical Therapy will help with that. Some Occupational Therapy as well to help with balance and coordination. Especially if you want to dance ballet again.”
“No tendus this week, got it.”
Then she handed her a PaDD. “Read this out aloud please, and then give us a summary.”
Kane, AMO
Dalton proceeded to read a page about basic genetics. “Cool, going back to my biology roots. Gene expression is the process of turning the information encoded in the gene into a function, producing proteins or non-coding RNA that ultimately effect phenotypes. Which is how we get my dazzling blue eyes. Though I will say that I will miss the electric vibe I had going on. Not going to miss how any damage that happened to the ship I felt as some type of pain though, so I’m glad to be done with that nonsense.”
~Corinne Dalton
Kane grinned at Alexis. “Always with the full attention to detail. Someday I’m gonna have you just wing it for once.” He watched all the readings while the testing was going on and then said “Huh… normally I’d expect some cognitive fatigue, considering how much of a draw moving and learning your body is taking… but there is no indication.” He looked back at Cori and said “Pay close attention to your body for a while with regards to fatigue. That may not register right away with your brain.”
Kane, R&D
Cori nodded. “I should also note that I did that diagnostic you suggested before you left and there are a high number of discrepancies. I was able to fix some, but there are lots I couldn’t figure out. Most are really tiny things though, like as we discovered no knowing my favourite colour. I’m expecting those memory gaps you mentioned to be a result of those discrepancies.”
