Her brain shifted to alpha waves and for another six minutes, nothing else changed.

And then her lids fluttered. Her fingers flexed a little and she squinted a bit at the light, closing her eyes tightly for a moment. She could feel… everything. Every muscles, every nerve. It was all yelling at her brain.

Her heart rate spiked.

Kane grabbed a hypo and gave her a mild sedative and pain killer. “Let’s keep her still.” and he activated a low power restraining field. He looked down at her and said “Dalton. Lieutenant, hey! Look at me. Do you know me?”

Her eyes fluttered again and she squinted, her body relaxing as the sedative swept through her system. Cori blinked. And blinked again. A face came into frame. The wild hair, the beard. Her vivid blue eyes gazed intently. “Kane?” she rasped, before she began coughing. She was coughing. Coughing! If it weren’t tfor the coughs, she’d be losing her mind trying to reconcile that little detail just now.

Dr. Alexis came into view, “Let’s raise the bed some.” While Kane adjusted the field, she lifted the head of the bed. “That’s it. Keep coughing. Your new lungs are just needing a workout along with your diaphragm.” She grabbed what looked like a dentist’s tool. “When your ready, we’ll try a bit of water to moisten your mouth.”

Dr. Alexis

Cori kept coughing, even wheezing a bit, but then it started to ease. Her throat was a bit sore but she could feel the air moving in and out. She coughed once more and then nodded. “Water, please,” she said, her voice strained.

With a bit of moisture in her mouth, she could then moisten her lips too. “It worked,” she whispered.

“Indeed it did,” Dira said from her place out of the way. It was nothing sort of astonishing! “Lieutenant Corinne Dalton, welcome to the USS Ogawa, and to your new life.”

Captain Myqian CO

“Of course it did,” Alexis said as she ran scans over each bodily system and compared them.

Kane scanned her brainwaves and compared them to her most recent scan before the… ‘hiatus’… of not having a physical body. “So… everything matches up. There are a couple of areas in your hippocampus that don’t quite align; so you may have some memory gaps here and there… especially more recent memories.” He looked at her and said “But I wouldn’t worry too much about those. And the memories that made a significant impact should be unaffected.” He closed the scanner and leaned back against the console.

“Can’t be worse than losing a whole two years,” Cori said, her words a bit slower than she would have liked, but as she worked her jaw things seemed to be loosening.

“So Skipper…” Kane started, “… think we got room on the crew roster for a Science Officer?” and he looked at Dalton. “We’ll need to keep you close for observation. And getting back into a steady routine will aid in your transition back.” He looked at Alexis and psuedo-smiled. “And there is always that other thing that may keep her around.”

Kane. R&D

Their shadowy nemesis? Her new history could be reason to… Sinclair! Alexis shrugged, “Probable.”

Dira nodded slowly, watching Dalton carefully. There was no way for them to have prepared her for this new reality, the new body and all the challenges that would inevitably surface. “Indeed we do have room. If continuing to serve in Starfleet is still what you want, we’d be happy to have you. But it’s okay if you want to think it over.”

Bewilderment swept over her face. She had never considered not serving, notputting the uniform on again. It hadn’t really been an option on the Saracen, and her loyalty to Starfleet was the one thing that she felt had kept her still there all that time. But now she could go anywhere, do anything. The possibilities were endless and that in of itself was daunting. “I love Starfleet, but… I’ll think about it.” She swallowed- a strange sensation, that. “I haven’t been a science officer for years, and it was only just before I was ripped out of the Saracen that Royal and I talked about my future and I asked our Chief Science Officer for official tasks in the department. I don’t even know if I’m any good at it any more.”

“You have time,” Dira said, casting a gentle smile and a feeling of ease over Dalton. It was a discussion for later.

“Wait, what’s the other thing that would keep me here?” Dalton asked.

Myqian drew closer, leaning against the foot of the bed, her dark eyes taking the woman in as she assessed her emotional state. Could she handle this information? But she would find out pretty damn fast once she looked at the crew manifest. “Lieutenant… Corinne, there is one vital piece of information you need to know about this ship’s crew. One person you should know about, and that is my first officer.” She paused very briefly to take deep inhale. “Commander Royal Sinclair…”

Cori blinked before her eyes darted frantically, her heart racing. “Wait, what? He’s here? He’s been here this whole time?!” She sat fully up abruptly, which was a terrible mistake as her limbs didn’t know how to function yet and she immediately got dizzy and lost her balance, tipping over even as she tried to catch herself.

Alexis was still by the bed and caught her, easing her back on the biobed. “I don’t want to give orders, Lt. You have had no free choice for too long. However, your body is much like a new born’s. I highly recommend you not do that again. If this one is damaged we can’t get a new one. You will get there.”

Kane, AMO

Kane chuckled. “Perfect. Adrrnal response and neurological spike. F^<king fantastic.” He looked at Dalton. “Listen… there was a lot we… I… didn’t tell you. That was for our protection as well as yours. But yeah… Sinclair is our XO. And you are on the most advanced medical ship in Star Fleet.” He looked at Alexis and said “Oh. And her name is Kane, too. That’s my wife. She’s the one that built put your body that you just tried to knock to the floor.”
