Her brain shifted to alpha waves and for another six minutes, nothing else changed.

And then her lids fluttered. Her fingers flexed a little and she squinted a bit at the light, closing her eyes tightly for a moment. She could feel… everything. Every muscles, every nerve. It was all yelling at her brain.

Her heart rate spiked.

Kane grabbed a hypo and gave her a mild sedative and pain killer. “Let’s keep her still.” and he activated a low power restraining field. He looked down at her and said “Dalton. Lieutenant, hey! Look at me. Do you know me?”

Her eyes fluttered again and she squinted, her body relaxing as the sedative swept through her system. Cori blinked. And blinked again. A face came into frame. The wild hair, the beard. Her vivid blue eyes gazed intently. “Kane?” she rasped, before she began coughing. She was coughing. Coughing! If it weren’t tfor the coughs, she’d be losing her mind trying to reconcile that little detail just now.

Dr. Alexis came into view, “Let’s raise the bed some.” While Kane adjusted the field, she lifted the head of the bed. “That’s it. Keep coughing. Your new lungs are just needing a workout along with your diaphragm.” She grabbed what looked like a dentist’s tool. “When your ready, we’ll try a bit of water to moisten your mouth.”

Cori kept coughing, even wheezing a bit, but then it started to ease. Her throat was a bit sore but she could feel the air moving in and out. She coughed once more and then nodded. “Water, please,” she said, her voice strained.

With a bit of moisture in her mouth, she could then moisten her lips too. “It worked,” she whispered.

“Indeed it did,” Dira said from her place out of the way. It was nothing sort of astonishing! “Lieutenant Corinne Dalton, welcome to the USS Ogawa, and to your new life.”
