“Bye?” Cori said, shaking her head.
Left alone she wandered around the lab, totally snooping. Not that there was anything else obviously secretive about other than her cube. Her cube. What nonsense was that? Yes, it freed her in a way but as she moved back over to the worktable and braced her hands on edge, she glared at the device. She resented everything about it, and it made her so angry.
Then she thought about Royal. Was she kidding herself? Maybe. Of course she wanted someone like that to care for her. Who wouldn’t? It was as she remembered telling herself, that she was capable of being loved, but the ones who had loved her had never factored in, never chosen her over other things, and left her heartbroken. Royal wasn’t wrong to tell her that she wasn’t ready for relationships. Would she ever? With anyone?
And with that depressing thought, she shifted herself back into the simulated world, conjuring up her mare Lacey. And then she went for a ride.

Two Weeks Later…
Kane stepped into the lab. He wasn’t in uniform and he looked around. “Dalton! You decent? We have some things to talk about… like, right fu<%!ng now.”
Kane, R&D
The air shimmered and Cori appeared, dressed in black leggings and an oversized purple sweater askew and baring one shoulder. “Since you asked to nicely,” she said dryly, thought there was a measure of wariness in her eyes. She wanted to ask, but she also didn’t. It had been a long two weeks. Lonely weeks. She could make believe her mare was real but it was still make believe, no matter how you dressed it up.

Kane leaned against the wall, arms crossed on his chest. He looked at Dalton and said “So… you need to make a choice. And I’ll be honest… this could kill you. But… we have a body for you. It’s actually your body, thanks to some DNA rewriting Dr. Alexis did so very brilliantly. And we are pretty damn certain we can move you into it if you want. But there is the risk it doesn’t work. And we only get the one shot. So… it’s up to you. We are ready right now to do this, and there are a lot of things we did to make sure that when you are back, you will be left alone. We can talk about that after. For now, we just need to know… you want to be fully human again? Or stay like you are? Choice is yours.”
Kane, R&D
Alexis stood beside him. “I can explain the body to you if you like. It is your body, right down to the DNA and bioelectrical pulses.”
Dr. Alexis
Cori blinked and stared at them. Yes they had mentioned they were going to try to get her a body, but who in their right mind would actually put faith in that? Not her. She had experienced too much to get lost in the whims of others.
She stepped up to the table that housed the blue cube and blew out a nonexistent breath. “I’d rather die than live in hiding or at the whims of whomever might be feeling scared of me that day.” She looked up at them. “I do want you to explain it to me, but I’m in. What do I have to lose, right? It’s not alike I have any family or anything, and royal doesn’t even know I’m here, so nothing lost there either.” Corinne nodded. “Let’s do it.” Had she processed what this all meant? Nope. But there was time for processing later.

“The body is composed of a positronic brain. The body was created using genetronic replication and a modified cybernetic nanites to seed the blank cells with the DNA we chose. In this case, your DNA.” Alexis had watched her with fascination. “Your integration with the computer has carried along with it your bioelectrical pattern. We will sync the positronic brain to your rhythm and then transfer your consciousness into it. It has been done before. You have many organic habits still. Such as breathing, but you don’t need to right now. You will when you wake up. If it is not automatic your body may panic. Kane and I will be there, you will not be alone. It may take time to remaster your gross and fine motor skills, but you will.”
Dr. Alexis
Kane nodded and then said “You more than likely won’t feel anything at all. It will be like you go to sleep and wake up you again. We’ll monitor you for a few hours in sickbay, and then a few days remotely, but from everything we have gleaned and looking at the others who have done this… it really be like waking up and just being you again. So… hop in. And the next time you see us, you can shake our hand.”
Kane, R&D
She had so many more questions but as he had mentioned it was all moot if this didn’t work, so for now Cori kept them to herself. “Alright then, let’s do this.”
