“Bye?” Cori said, shaking her head.

Left alone she wandered around the lab, totally snooping. Not that there was anything else obviously secretive about other than her cube. Her cube. What nonsense was that? Yes, it freed her in a way but as she moved back over to the worktable and braced her hands on edge, she glared at the device. She resented everything about it, and it made her so angry.

Then she thought about Royal. Was she kidding herself? Maybe. Of course she wanted someone like that to care for her. Who wouldn’t? It was as she remembered telling herself, that she was capable of being loved, but the ones who had loved her had never factored in, never chosen her over other things, and left her heartbroken. Royal wasn’t wrong to tell her that she wasn’t ready for relationships. Would she ever? With anyone?

And with that depressing thought, she shifted herself back into the simulated world, conjuring up her mare Lacey. And then she went for a ride.

Two Weeks Later…

Kane stepped into the lab. He wasn’t in uniform and he looked around. “Dalton! You decent? We have some things to talk about… like, right fu<%!ng now.”

Kane, R&D

The air shimmered and Cori appeared, dressed in black leggings and an oversized purple sweater askew and baring one shoulder. “Since you asked to nicely,” she said dryly, thought there was a measure of wariness in her eyes. She wanted to ask, but she also didn’t. It had been a long two weeks. Lonely weeks. She could make believe her mare was real but it was still make believe, no matter how you dressed it up.
