Kane looked at her… and laughed. “Oh, shit… hun, you have NO idea who I am or what you being here means. But I can tell you this… if someone thought that you were a threat?!” and he laughed (loudly) again. “Oh there is no fu<&ing WAY they would’a handed you off to me.” and he laughed again for some time before slowing down.
“Listen… I am not the poster child for compliance and trust, no matter what my clearance is. I am kept on a leash so short it might as well be a noose sometimes. So the fact that you are here with me?” and he shook his head. “Well, that means someone wants you outta that box. ‘Cause anyone that knows me, good OR bad, would know that’s the first thing I’m gonna do. I might be the biggest d!<k in this or any other Star Fleet; but I don’t play with people’s lives. That shit’s just cruel. And I may be mean as hell, but I am never cruel. And I don’t cater to those kind of ‘people’.” He paused and then thought… and then smiled a truly predatory and wicked smile. “I take that back… I’m only cruel to those that have it coming.” and he gave her a wink that said he absolutely was… and probably enjoyed it, as well. He turned back to the desk and opened up the computer. “And I will tell you right now… whoever jammed you up deserves everything rotten thing they get. Now… let’s figure out how to make you a body.” and he began tapping away.

For a moment she felt… what? Satisfaction that he felt just as strongly as she did about whomever did this to facing some sort of consequences? Yeah, actually, that’s what that was. But her thought distracted her him his other statement. “What do you mean, ‘a body’? Synths are illegal, remember?” At least they were the last time she was conscious. “I was barely considered a legal entity, and that’s only because Royal vouched for me.”

Kane grinned. “Synth ban was lifted after a certain Admiral ended up in an artificial body. But even with that, getting one is not as easy as heading down to the local body shop.” He was busy tapping away and then he suddenly stopped and looked at her. “Yeah… Tell me about you and Royal. Were you guys a thing? And if I could find him… would you want me to? Or would that be bag juju for you.” and he began tapping away again.
Kane, R&D
Oh this man was good at whiplash conversations! Admiral getting a synth body? What? But Kane was asking about Royal now. “Royal…” She let out a half snort/half sigh. “Even after he stopped being my official therapist, he understood how precarious my position was, and how much trauma I had experienced. He diagnosed me with depression and also an addiction… to relationships. With a holographic body I can’t experience substance abuse, or other physical manifestations of addiction, but I do have feelings. And I’ve craved connection, to not feel so alone, cast aside. And after years of avoiding relationships I threw myself into them so fully I lost myself.” She smirked. “So Royal put a kibosh on them until we worked through stuff.”
“We weren’t together, no, but… he saw me. The parts that had been mistreated and stomped on, the parts that were creative and joyful. I felt safe around him. That I could share things that others never bothered asking about, that were important to me, that had shaped me. And he cared. Would I like to see him again? Of course! I don’t know if anything ever would have happened or if he even felt that way about me, but he was still the dearest person I have in my life. But… two years…” Corinne looked up at Kane, her holographic eyes glistening. “I’ve been dead… missing… whatever before and the last time it made it impossible to return to the person that cared about me. It fell apart. I don’t want to do that to him. I don’t want to be the torpedo that is launched into his life without any consideration. That would be cruel, and like you, I’m not a cruel person, Kane.”
