Sadness swept over her and she frowned. “I don’t know what that even looks like now. Before, I could appear via holographic projection so long as there were emitters, and I had a mobile emitter so I could move about the ship. The Saracen only had emitters on the holodeck and in Sickbay, at least until they specially outfitted quarters with some so I could have my own space and not just lurk in the computer like a ghost.”
The lithe simulation of the woman stepped forwad towards Kane and eyed him intently for a moment. “Since I don’t know how I got into that cube… thing, I don’t know what my options are. Before, my consciousness was too integrated, too large to just pull out. But like I said, there are missing pieces.” Worry crossed her eyes. “I think I was ripped out, and if so, who knows what any of it looks like now.” She couldn’t even contemplate the hows and whys of her removal from her former ship, but deep down she wanted to scream at the cruelty. That someone made that decision about her fate, well… hey, he insinuated he worked for people who really would make those decisions.
Cori moved around him towards the cube and bent forward, staring at it. “Trapped again without even any consideration.” She snorted. “I don’t know why I’m so surprised, but I guess I just through I’d be treated with the due respect a sentient being and Lieutenant in Starfleet would be. My mistake.” Oh, how bitter she sounded!

Kane stopped working and fixed her with a glare. “God above, do you always see just the crap of a situation? I mean damn! Seriously? You get fank3d in a holodeck and you still get to live. You obviously made friends. Maybe even more so with that Royal guy. But all you can do is co.ain that it’s not ‘ideal’ or ‘perfect’.” and he shook his head and leaned back down to work. “Lady… if yiu really are what you say you are. I’d be a damn sight more thankful for what I had then what I don’t.” and then he said “Done. Now then…” and he disconnected the diagnostic module and plugged the… thing… he had just created into it.
Corinne whipped her head around and glared at him. “Says the man who is effectively holding a weapon to my head.” He might have read her file but he knew nothing about her.
”… what’s your favorite color?”

She stood up and blinked, confusion touching her eyes, her one true emotional tell. “I… I don’t know,” she whispered. A hole in her memory- a small detail about her, but it was an important one. “I think maybe blue?” Why though? Why blue? She didn’t know.

Kane looked at her a second and then looked around his workbench. He grabbed a few items and tossed them across the worktop close to her. One was a green isolinear chip. One was a red piece of wire. One was a Yello piece of broken laminate. And the last was a blue piece of metal. “Here. Which one do you like best? ” he asked.
Kane, R&D
She reached out to both the green isolinear chip and the blue metal, holding them in her hands and gazing at them. “Hmmm, strangely I think it’s both, Maybe because my adoptive parents farm was on a hill overlooking the ocean?” She slid the blue one back towards him. “Let’s go with that one.” It was a decision, but for what? She had no idea what he was doing.

“Blue and green. K” he said and tapped commands into the computer. That was all he did for several minutes and then he said “Done.” He stood up and unhooked the device he had built from the computer. He then ran a cable directly from the device to the cube. Before plugging it in, he said “Ok, in theory yiu should be able to move back and forth between these two. But there is no way I can duplicate whatever that is-” and he pointed at the cube, “- so for now that will house your… whatever it is. But this should at least help yiu feel a bit better… might even help with some of those holes yiu have, too.” and he plugged the cable into the port.
Everything shifted around Cori and though he had explained to her what he had done, the reality was very different.
The device was a rudimentary computer ‘core’ for all intents and purposes. But much, much, MUCH smaller and primitive. Yet inside there was a single construct: a house on a hill overlooking an ocean. It was large and empty, but Kane’s voice echoed throughout the alternate reality. “You should be able to create any items you want. There is enough diagnostic power to help you see where your memory holes are, and I installed an adaptive coding platform that will ‘learn’ the base language of the cube and try to repair any bugs. It’ll take a while, though. Few weeks, probably. But if something goes weird, tell me and I’ll try to fix it. You can come and go as you please between the core and the cube, but inside here you can’t be seen or heard as the default. You can activate either speech or holoemitters as you want, and I can turn them on as well. Take a bit, walk around, see what else you may need. I’ll be back in about an hour or so.”

“Oh, okay,” Cori said, still feeling uneasy but at least it was better than being in a void or stuck in a little room. Her holographic body mimicked taking a deep breath and she began to explore the setting. It wasn’t the same as her family farm on Ajilon, but it didn’t need to be. Bare feet touched the grass, and she slowly meandered over the rolling field. The warmth of the sun on her face also cast a sweet scent of growing things into the air, current of wind flowing from the ocean and carrying the scent of salt to her nose.
Yes, she would do the diagnostic and see if she could identify the missing pieces, but right now there was something more important for her to do. With a impish grin that no one else could see, Cori set off at a run across the field that ran down and back over the hill. Yes, she was alone here and that would not do for long, but she was free! Yes she was trapped somewhere in a place with some man who clearly saw her as a potential threat and yet was trying to help her, but it was in this moment that she realized that she was out of the Saracen’s computer. She didn’t know what that meant fully yet, but her worry of being lost and forgotten when all the people had moved on the ship itself ended up as some museum piece with her included, well… that future had shifted.
And so Cori ran and dance and leapt over the field, the sun illuminating her raven hair, and felt a small moment of something that might actually be joy.
