“We contemplated a body but like I said, I was scared of losing myself if they tried to extract me from the Saracen. Too late for that worry, now, right?” That he was even contemplating a future for her was positive, wasn’t it? He was possibly on her side? But Cori had been burned by people so many times that it was hard to trust someone she had barely met and for the moment would only tolerate her voice. For the time beign she still would not be seen. Story of her life…
“Royal…” she said softly. “He knows more about me than all but a very select few people. And he believed in me. I’ll ever forget that moment when he sat there doing an eval on me in what he called my transformed state, and he got really excited because I was upset, mourning what could have been, trying to make sense of what my life had come to. And he looked at me and explained that he had read all my psyc evals from my career and and everything he was experiencing from me was an exact match. Yes, I didn’t have a flesh and bone body, but I was still me, not some computer facsimile. Do you know what it like to be truly seen, Kane? To be seen and not found wanting? To have someone want to help you, protect you from the thins you can’t do yourself? To wait for you to find your way and offer kindness and compassion while you do? That is Royal to me. Yes, we were friends and I miss him. But I have no idea what year it is even. For all I know, it’s decades in the future and he’s dead now. I want to ask the year, but to be honest, it terrifies me. I keep losing periods of my life and it’s maddening.”

Ka e looked at the cube for a minute, and then went to the diagnostic computer connected to it. He reactivated the holoemitters on the cube and then looked at Cori.
To suddenly appear was a little jarring, but Cori took in the space around her, and then Kane with a query in her intense blue eyes.
“Two years. It’s been two years since you vanished off the Saracen.” Kane said flatly. “I looked up your file… all of it. So that should give you a clue as to who I work for. Oh, I didn’t lie. I support a medical team. That’s my day job. My other gig is dealing with stuff like this.” He went and sat at the bench and began tinkering. “A few things to know. This room is a Faraday cage. You have no access to the outside world. None. And that-” and he pointed a screwdriver at a small rectangle on the outside of her cube “- is an explosive charge. Screw around with me or make think tiu are any kind of threat. there won’t be anything left of that box you are in.” He went back to tinkering. “I’m not saying any of this to sound mean or to make you think I’m scared of you. I’m not. But I also don’t take chances on stuff like this. Now then…” and he looked up at her, “… how about I get you outta that box and I to something that might feel a little better?”

Sadness swept over her and she frowned. “I don’t know what that even looks like now. Before, I could appear via holographic projection so long as there were emitters, and I had a mobile emitter so I could move about the ship. The Saracen only had emitters on the holodeck and in Sickbay, at least until they specially outfitted quarters with some so I could have my own space and not just lurk in the computer like a ghost.”
The lithe simulation of the woman stepped forwad towards Kane and eyed him intently for a moment. “Since I don’t know how I got into that cube… thing, I don’t know what my options are. Before, my consciousness was too integrated, too large to just pull out. But like I said, there are missing pieces.” Worry crossed her eyes. “I think I was ripped out, and if so, who knows what any of it looks like now.” She couldn’t even contemplate the hows and whys of her removal from her former ship, but deep down she wanted to scream at the cruelty. That someone made that decision about her fate, well… hey, he insinuated he worked for people who really would make those decisions.
Cori moved around him towards the cube and bent forward, staring at it. “Trapped again without even any consideration.” She snorted. “I don’t know why I’m so surprised, but I guess I just through I’d be treated with the due respect a sentient being and Lieutenant in Starfleet would be. My mistake.” Oh, how bitter she sounded!

Kane stopped working and fixed her with a glare. “God above, do you always see just the crap of a situation? I mean damn! Seriously? You get fank3d in a holodeck and you still get to live. You obviously made friends. Maybe even more so with that Royal guy. But all you can do is co.ain that it’s not ‘ideal’ or ‘perfect’.” and he shook his head and leaned back down to work. “Lady… if yiu really are what you say you are. I’d be a damn sight more thankful for what I had then what I don’t.” and then he said “Done. Now then…” and he disconnected the diagnostic module and plugged the… thing… he had just created into it.
Corinne whipped her head around and glared at him. “Says the man who is effectively holding a weapon to my head.” He might have read her file but he knew nothing about her.
”… what’s your favorite color?”

She stood up and blinked, confusion touching her eyes, her one true emotional tell. “I… I don’t know,” she whispered. A hole in her memory- a small detail about her, but it was an important one. “I think maybe blue?” Why though? Why blue? She didn’t know.

Kane looked at her a second and then looked around his workbench. He grabbed a few items and tossed them across the worktop close to her. One was a green isolinear chip. One was a red piece of wire. One was a Yello piece of broken laminate. And the last was a blue piece of metal. “Here. Which one do you like best? ” he asked.
