The part of Dira that had gone to medical school knew that pain was the body’s way of telling us something. In this case, the lingering pain was not normal, especially given their advanced medicine. She also knew that sometimes other things in a person’s life complicated healing, like emotional distress. An overwhelmed nervous system had to prioritize what to handle first, and an ache in one place was never going to be as high up as the flight or fight response.

The captain could have gone to Primary Sickbay, but she came down here for a specific reason. She looked around for Doctor Kane as she flexed the fingers of her left hand.

Captain Myqian, CO

Alexis was on the far side of the bay with another crew member that was stretched out on a biobed. Jt’nal, the lead nurse spotted the captain and walked over. “Hello, Captain. How can we assist you?”

Kane, AMO

Dira pointed to her wrist. “I’m, umm, having some lingering issues with an injury. And I was hoping to speak with Doctor Kane as well, when she’s available, of course.” Yes, the whole crew knew at least the surface details of what went down with Franks in the jefferies tubes, and they definitely knew all about the booby trapped shuttles, but the details of her injuries were limited to those that had treated her, Walker, Sinclair and those she specifically told. But Alexis had been in Sickbay when she was there and had looked over her chart, so she was aware too.

Captain Myqian, CO

Jt’nal nodded, “Of course Captain. Would you prefer to have a seat on a biobed or wait in the Dr Kane’s office?” After getting her settled, Jt’nal walked over to Alexis to inform her that the captain was waiting to speak to her. He also mentioned that the captain stated she was having trouble with an injury. Alexis finished up what she was doing and headed toward the Captain. “Captain, Jt’nal said you are having some difficulty with an injury?”

Kane, AMO

Settled in Kane’s office, Myqian nodded and lifted her left wrist. “My shoulder seems to have healed fine, but my wrist still aches on and off. I’m generally pretty careful with it because it’s only been a couple of weeks. I have a hard time when I’m exercising, even just doing gentle body weight exercising. But I do know the force of the dislocation means that it was more than just the joint being displaced. I don’t know if I just need to be patient or if it’s something I’m making worse through everyday use, but the pain seems… unusual.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Alexis nodded, and reached into a drawer and stood and walked around the desk. She flipped open a tricorder and ran the scanner over the arm and then she used the portable microtome she had pulled out to take x-rays of the wrist.

Kane, AMO

There seemed to be some slight compression of the median nerve as it moved through the carpal tunnel, an area which had bene directly injured when Dira had forcibly dislocated her wrist. There was also a 1 cm hairline fracture on the anterior side of the scaphoid bone and the X-ray showed it was actually a bit larger before but was slowly healing.

Captain Myqian, CO

“Hmmm,” Alexis moved back around the desk and pulled up her file. “Dr. Solar fixed the features, but you’ve reinjured your scaphoid bone. And the median nerve in the carpal tunnel is pinched. Some minor surgery and a session with the bone knitter will take care of that. You’re over working your wrist.”

Dira sighed. “It’s so tight, and feels swollen and hard to move some days. I’m trying to be gentle and keep up with both my exercise and my work.” She blew out a breath. “Also… I don’t always sleep great and I… get these nightmares. Sometimes I find I wake up with my hand in an awkward position.”

Captain Myqian, CO

“You are using it to much,” Alexis said bluntly. “If it is swollen and hard to move then you should not be trying, and should have come sooner.” It wasn’t a criticism or chiding but simple fact. She loaded a hypo while she spoke and then held it up. “Anti-inflammatory. It will help reduce the swelling and help with the pain. After we do the correction, I will set you up with the occupational therapist.”

She sat down and looked at the Captain. “There are medications to help with sleep and even nightmares. There are other aids, like the alpha-wave inducer as well. If the nightmares are the main cause of your lack of sleep, I would not be comfortable prescribing such. I recommend you see Dr. Grayson.” Alexis knew her limits and when it came to patient care she didn’t allow ego to get in the way of saying someone else was the expert. “She can prescribe something for you, and I am happy to over see the dosing and side-effects if she needs me to do so.”
