Dr. Kane, the female one, walked into the lab and gave a cursory glance to identify which station was running the analysis of the compounds. She walked over to the lab tech. “Where are we on the analysis results for these?”

NE McGuffin rolled across the floor on their chair, a sandwich propped up in one hand as they tapped on their terminal a few times. After swallowing the bite of lunch the NE pointed at the wall. “High levels of Potassium salts and other natural potassium compounds. Not lethal in any regular dosing, but sustained, habitual, use of the pills and the tea would result in high level buildup in the blood.”

Alexis looked up at the screen, eyes narrowed. Easily obtained and easily misused for nefarious purposes. “We confiscated a small vial of brownish liquid as well. What was in that? And what exactly were the herbs?”

=/\=Kane to Walker. The pills and tea contained high levels of Potassium salts and other natural potassium compounds. If the Ambassador had just been taking regular dosages it would not be lethal. However the sustained multiple times a day usage will have resulted in high level buildup in the blood. I am still waiting in the analysis of the dark brown liquid that was confiscated.=/\=

IC: Brad nodded to himself. That made sense, and tracked with what he’d learned so far. =/\=Understood,=/\= he replied. =/\=Keep at it. I’m going to start her on treatment for hyperkalemia, hopefully reducing her potassium levels to something more approaching species-normal will resolve a great deal of her symptoms.=/\=

The NE squinted at the screen before taking another bite of the egg salad on white deliciousness before squinting trying to sound out the word. “Veh… Va… I am not sure if that accent mark is a long or short vowel, doctor, but either way it appears to be an herbal concentrate used on their home world in folk medicine. Akin to how mercury was used on earth in the 1700s as a treatment for a variety of illnesses.” McGuffin shrugged, avoiding any further moral judgments but offering up, “In small doses probably not incredibly toxic. In large enough doses, say slipped into tea, mixed into egg salad, et cetera, it would produce a salty taste and oily texture.”

Alexis tried not to be irritated. “McGuffin, there is no eating in the lab,” she reminded absently. “You are sure it is like mercury or are you speculating? Because in large doses mercury does more than taste and feel weird on the palette. It causes tremors, insomnia, memory loss, neuromuscular effects, headaches, and cognitive and motor dysfunction.” Which the ambassador had. If this was cinsidered a poison, there would be attemoted murder added to the list. “It can cause permanent lung damage and death. Other than the name,” which she couldn’t see the screen in order to pronounce herself, “and it is a folk remedy, did you get any other information? Like side effects, current research on its use, or how to treat an overdose?”

She sighed, irritated, and turned the screen around, “I will look it up myself. Get that sandwich out of here.” She pulled up all information they had on the substance: historical uses, modern research on use and side effects, both at low dosages and high doses. Symptoms of toxicity and how to treat it. Laws and regulations on Gossaneen III concerning the substance as well.
