Dira drank from her glass, allowing herself a moment to take in his words, to remember what it was that drove her to take the chance. That day. That challenging, dangerous, surprising and life altering day. A moment later she smiled. “Thank you, Achilleas.”

“What about you? What brought you to the stars?”

Achilleas’ gaze softened as he observed Dira taking a moment to absorb his words. Her smile in response warmed his heart, and he inclined his head slightly at her gratitude.

“You’re welcome, Dira,” he replied, his voice carrying a genuine warmth.

As she turned the conversation back to him, Achilleas considered her question. His journey to the stars was a story he had shared with very few people, but he felt a certain level of comfort with Dira, a sense of mutual understanding.

“I was raised in a small coastal village on the Mediterranean, a place rich in history and steeped in tradition,” he began, his voice carrying a nostalgic tone. “Growing up, I was always fascinated by the stories of explorers who had sailed those same waters centuries ago. The sense of adventure they must have felt, the excitement of the unknown, it captivated my imagination.”

He paused, a smile tugging at his lips. “My parents encouraged my curiosity, and when the opportunity came to join Starfleet, I knew it was a chance to continue that legacy of exploration. The stars were my ocean, and the vastness of space offered a canvas for discovery that I couldn’t resist.”

Achilleas looked at Dira, his eyes reflecting his passion. “And now, every time I step onto a new planet, or analyze an uncharted phenomenon, that sense of wonder and adventure comes rushing back, reminding me why I chose this path.”

She smiled. “I’m glad it still holds the same allure it once did, and that you can find the reminders when you need them.” Dira drank heavily from her glass. Yep, this would definitely be the last one. Goodness, what time was it even anyway?

“Is there anything you would love to do that you haven’t yet?”

Achilleas looked down in thought for a few moments. He looked back up at Dira with a strained expression. “I uh, have a desire to visit Bajor because I’ve heard so many good things. I just don’t have an actual reason to go anymore.”

Dira nodded. “Sure, the original reason isn’t there, but why not go because you are interested? People visit different planets for lesser reasons. What’s the harm ins just being a tourist and experiencing new things?”

Achilleas was thoughtful for a moment but then shook his head. “That was from a time that seems like a different life. I need to do a lot of reassessing in what I want from life, though I’ve had a good amount of that with Starfleet Medical. The counselors there were very insistent that I find purpose in life.”
