snipArriving at the lounge they chose a table and sat down. “I’m starving! I totally forgot to eat today and have had nothing but coffee.” A server made their way over and Bryn didn’t hesitate. “Hello, I’d like whatever soup is available with bread and butter on the side and a glass of iced tea, please.” Mossy, green eyes settled on the XO, curiosity shining in their depths. What…no, how much food would it take to fill Sinclair’s belly, she wondered.
—Shar
Royal looked at the server and said “Leek and potato soup, brown bread, three double cheeseburgers with everything and two large orders of fries. Oh, and a chocolate milkshake. Thank you.” When the server left, Sinclair looked at Shar and said “So tell me about you, Lieutenant. Where are you from? How did you get to Star Fleet?”
Sinclair
As she listened to Sinclair’s order of food, her eyes widened with surprise. That was a lot of food for one person! Was he playing with her or did he really eat that amount? Bryn told herself to pay attention to find out. “Oh, I found a love of medicine and patient care early on. I never thought life on Ferla was very exciting so I decided to join Star Fleet Academy when I was quite young. Luckily, my parents agreed so when I was old enough I applied and was accepted.”
Sinclair nodded and then said “Forgive me for asking, but is Ferla a member of the Federation? I haven’t heard of it before. What is it like?”
The food arrived just then. Bryn paused to take a sip of the iced tea. “So nothing outrageous, a simple story really.” Noticing they had the same kind of soup, Bryn tasted it and smiled. “This is really good. I know what a potato is, but what’s a leek?”
—Shar
bump
He chuckled and said “A leek is a cousin to the Terran onion or shallot, but without the potent, sharp taste. It’s much more mild and makes a great soup.”
Sinclair
She often got questions about her home world because not many were familiar with it. “Ferla is a small planet.” She compared its size to Earth because Sinclair was from there. “Its about half the size of Earth with a population of…” Here she had to stop and remember the latest statistics she’d read about her home. “…53 million or so. As a people, we are curious about space and other life forms but also, we like life to be simple.”
The soup was delicious and Bryn decided she would begin using leeks in her dietary choices from then on. “We are peaceful for the most part and haven’t had much trouble from other species, but I’ve always attributed that to how well we patrol our space borders. No outsiders have gotten to the surface of our planet without being detected quite a bit in advance. We’ve always had time to prepare for their arrival before they got there so weapons are ready should they be hostile, and if they are friendly—gifts to welcome them.”
Bryn set her spoon down and drank a few swallows of iced tea. “Physically we are all cut from the same cloth. Brown hair and gray to green eyes. We have no trouble telling each other apart but I’ve noticed a few other species can’t differentiate us as easily.”
—Shar
Sinclair listened intently as she described her world. “Thats certainly different from humans. Save for siblings, I think humans are one of the most appearance-diverse species I have encountered. Does your planet allow non-natives to live there? How long have they been members of the Federation?” he asked as he took another bite.
Sinclair, XO
As she slid butter over the slice of bread, Bryn answered. “There are off-worlders who live on Ferla, but getting the okay to do so is quite a process. One has to apply for citizenship and be thoroughly investigated before being approved. We don’t want to allow anyone there who has a violent or illegal history.” There was a moment’s pause while she chewed a bite of bread. “That isn’t to say Ferla is without crime, but the statistics are very low when compared to other species on their planets.” She smiled at Sinclair, pleased to share about her home world. “For some reason, I always confuse how long we’ve been a member of the Federation. It’s either 18 or 21 Terran years.” Relaxing back in her chair, finished with her meal, Bryn crossed her legs beneath the table and brushed back a lock of hair that had fallen over her shoulder.
“So, Cmdr, tell me something about you.”
—Shar
Royal thought for a moment and then exhaled deeply. “What to tell? I’m from Scotland, on Terra. Lived there my entire life before joining Star Fleet. Grew up near the Glasgo shipyards. My Da and Senair both worked there, but Senair was a Fleet Marine before I was born.” There was a noticeable lack of a mention of a mother.
Sinclair
“What about the women in your family, or siblings?” Bryn had older brothers and her father was still alive. It had been difficult even talking with boys when she was growing up because her siblings had scared them off before she could get to know them. Her social life changed when she went to Star Fleet Academy and she would be forever grateful that she’d made the decision to go there when she had.
Sinclair shook his head. “Only child. My Ma was killed when I was a wee baby. I never knew her.”
Her brows drew together as she registered the loss of his mother.
“How many women are pining away for your attention on the planets you’ve visited?”
Hoping for lusty details, she leaned forward and put an elbow on the table resting her chin in her hand.
—Shar
He laughed and shook his head. “No one that I am aware of. I had a girlfriend a long time ago, but the nature of the job isn’t conducive to long-term relationships unless you are on a station or deep-space exploratory assignment. She went one place, I went another… and one day we looked up and hadn’t spoken in months. So we parted as friends and that was that.” He leaned forward and looked at Shar and said “What about you? How many hearts have you broken?” and he chuckled.
Sinclair, XO
She sat up straight. “Well, none on purpose.” On the surface, that was true. No one entered into a relationship already thinking how they could end it. But there had been a few in her past she just wasn’t interested in even though they pursued her. “I’m not against long term relationships or eventually finding the one I’d like to settle down with, it just hasn’t happened yet.” She tried to read the look on Sinclair’s face as he gaged her answer.
The look showed that there was an interest in the answer; but whether that was a conscious interest was hard to tell.
“I’m not actively looking for a life partner, but I think it will happen eventually.” Bryn wasn’t sure how long her career might last with Star Fleet. She looked around the room to spot a waiter and waived him over. “I think I’ll have dessert.”
“Chocolate mousse, please.” The server nodded then they both looked at the first officer. “Would you care for something sweet?”
—Shar
Sinclair waved off the question and said “Oh, no thank you. I have to watch my figure.” with a playful wink. “But I will have a pint of ale, please.” The server nodded and left, and Sinclair said “Ok, what is your most secret guilty pleasure? Tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine.” and he grinned.
Sinclair, XO
There was no way she would actually tell him the real answer to that question, but there were pleasures she could substitute for it. “Hmmm, a guilty pleasure…” Bryn glanced up at the ceiling as she considered. “Well, I do love an all over massage—especially on Risa. Did you know they are trained in the pleasure points of several species?” A smile lifted the corners of her mouth. “The Risans do many things really well, massage is just one of them.”
“You know, I have never been.” Royal said with a chuckle. “I dunno, it has just never been on my bucket list of things to do.”
His ale and her mousse arrived. While watching him take a drink, Bryn lifted a bit of the creamy dessert to her mouth. “And you? What is your guilty pleasure?”
—Shar
He smiled slightly around the glass and then set it down as he swallowed the ale. “I don’t know about guilty pleasure… but I do enjoy watching really crappy vids. The cheesier, the better. I especially like them when you can tell the cast and crew know the film is awful, and they just run with it.” and he laughed. “Oh, it makes it so much fun.”
Royal
The mousse was a chocolatey, whipped mouthful of bliss and Bryn’s eyes closed with a long blink. “Mmmmm, so good!” Back to the conversation. “Really? You like them? I honestly don’t think I’ve ever watched one to the end. I like thriller/suspense vids—scary ones too. Let’s see, what else is a guilty pleasure?” While she thought, the spoon found its way to her mouth again so she was smiling when she said, “What about sensory deprivation tanks? I like them.”
—Shar
Royal shook his head. “Oh hell no. Way too quiet for me. I even have a little sound playing while I sleep. If things are completely quiet, I get nervous. In my line of work, all quiet means so.ething is wrong.” and he chuckled. “And I take it the mousse is good? At least judging from that smile every time you take a bite.”
