Dira laughed and raised her glass before taking a deep drink. Lowering her glass, she rested it on her thigh and tilted her head up to the ceiling. “I look forward to trying it out and looking up at the sky. You don’t realize how much we miss on a starship just having our eyes gazin’ at the same sight lines. But even sitting on the floor, or lying down and looking up and around, it’s allso different. Ya know?” she said, dipping her gaze back to him.

“I’ve always looked up at the sky though mainly to see the stars. Being among the stars gives a different perspective than planetside.” Achilleas mused back. “But when boating I always checked the sky for storm fronts and to see which way the wind was blowing. I think that our appreciation of what’s around us doesn’t have to be diminished by the fact that we’re looking for a reason beyond just appreciating it.”

Dira grinned. “You’d like my father. He’s an artist and always waxin’ poetic about stuff. I think dat’s where I get it from mostly. He got my need to wander de stars, even when I didn’t always get it. Sometimes I still don’t, even dough de pull is still dere.”

Achilleas smiled warmly at Dira’s mention of her father, appreciating the insight into her background and the source of her poetic inclinations. It was clear that she held a deep connection with her father and that he had played a significant role in shaping her perspective on life.
“Your father sounds like a remarkable individual,” he replied, genuinely intrigued. “An artist with a penchant for poetic expressions and a shared love for the stars – that’s quite the combination. It’s fascinating how our parents’ passions and outlooks can often find their way into our own lives, even when we don’t fully comprehend them at first.”
The gleam in Dira’s eyes deepened. “Did you know my mother is a neruoscientist?” The way she saw it, she was born to explorers who delved places that not other dared go. The brain, the soul. No wonder she had wanted to learn about everything as a child, and her parents were quite happy to oblige.
Achilleas was intrigued by Dira’s revelation about her mother being a neuroscientist. It seemed fitting, considering Dira’s own penchant for delving into the complexities of the human mind and emotions. It was a fascinating realization that her lineage seemed to foster a natural curiosity for exploration, even if it ventured into the realm of understanding the intricacies of the human brain.
“It’s truly remarkable how family legacies and passions can shape our own paths,” he remarked, his tone warm and thoughtful. “The innate curiosity you share with your parents certainly seems to have guided you towards this journey of exploration and service.”
“You have no idea,” she said with a smirk.
He leaned back, his gaze thoughtful. “The allure of exploring the stars is indeed a powerful force, a call to venture into the unknown and uncover the mysteries of the universe. It’s a journey that resonates with many of us in Starfleet, a pursuit that continues to drive us forward.”
Achilleas smiled, feeling a sense of connection with Dira as they discussed their shared love for exploration and discovery.

She nodded. “Dere is something inexplicable that made me want to leave Vega. I love de planet and it’s truly lovely, and I could’ve gotten my medical degree and done my residency dere, but…” Dira shook her head. “I can’t explain it other dan to say I was called to serve. Never saw command in de cards, but life is nothin’ is not a surprise.”

As she talked about leaving Vega, Achilleas could sense the depth of her emotions. It was clear that her decision to join Starfleet and take on a role of leadership wasn’t made lightly. He nodded in understanding as she mentioned the inexplicable calling that drove her to leave her home planet behind.
“Life does have a way of surprising us,” he agreed with a soft smile. “Command might not have been in your initial plans, but it’s evident that your sense of duty and leadership have found a place in this role. And I must say, the universe is richer for it.”

Dira drank from her glass, allowing herself a moment to take in his words, to remember what it was that drove her to take the chance. That day. That challenging, dangerous, surprising and life altering day. A moment later she smiled. “Thank you, Achilleas.”
“What about you? What brought you to the stars?”

Achilleas’ gaze softened as he observed Dira taking a moment to absorb his words. Her smile in response warmed his heart, and he inclined his head slightly at her gratitude.
“You’re welcome, Dira,” he replied, his voice carrying a genuine warmth.
As she turned the conversation back to him, Achilleas considered her question. His journey to the stars was a story he had shared with very few people, but he felt a certain level of comfort with Dira, a sense of mutual understanding.
“I was raised in a small coastal village on the Mediterranean, a place rich in history and steeped in tradition,” he began, his voice carrying a nostalgic tone. “Growing up, I was always fascinated by the stories of explorers who had sailed those same waters centuries ago. The sense of adventure they must have felt, the excitement of the unknown, it captivated my imagination.”
He paused, a smile tugging at his lips. “My parents encouraged my curiosity, and when the opportunity came to join Starfleet, I knew it was a chance to continue that legacy of exploration. The stars were my ocean, and the vastness of space offered a canvas for discovery that I couldn’t resist.”
Achilleas looked at Dira, his eyes reflecting his passion. “And now, every time I step onto a new planet, or analyze an uncharted phenomenon, that sense of wonder and adventure comes rushing back, reminding me why I chose this path.”
