She laughed, and it honestly felt good. “Well, don’t go telling everyone, or else I’ll never get a moment’s peace.”

“No promises” Drake joked.

Sipping her own coffee, Dira leaned back against the couch. “So, I’m sure wondering why I called you up here. Essentially, I have an idea brewing in my head that is very much in your department’s expertise and I wanted to pick your brain a bit before we take it to Walker and others.”

He nodded, intrigued.

“Based on experiences with the old Ogawa and now this ship, if we ran emergency medicine drills, what sort do you feel would be the most useful?”

Drake pondered. He liked the idea. “The medical staff on this ship is… extraordinary. Their skill as the staff of a hospital is unquestionable. A true emergency drill can’t have too much forewarning, time to prepare. Half an hour, an hour. And then the drill team goes into a simulated triage situation. They’re outnumbered at least 5 or 6 to 1 by patients. The odds of organizing anything are slim. And there are impossible choices to make.”

She nodded slowly. “Are there any particular variables that you want to test within a triage? Particular injuries for example? Situations that might require solid collaboration?” In her head, she was starting to map out a much larger idea more solidly and it was starting to be a little bit exciting.

Drake answered quickly. “If we’re talking about working the whole crew- I’ll pull from my own experience, collapsed mineshaft. Everyone has a job somewhere along the line to help get people out, to the temporary hospital, triaged, and sent to appropriate doctors if a specialist is needed.” After a momentary hesitation he continued. “If we’re just talking about the medical team- you want a Borg attack. The combination of injuries created during a conflict with the Borg will make people work hard, fast, and eventually as a team.”

Dira considered all this. “Actually, a Bog attack would also test the rest of the crew. If we take damage, we’d need to be on the ball repair-wise, security would be suppressing boarders. But also a Borg attack is pretty dire. For some people that might be a it much. We’ve actually done the temp hospital thing a couple times, so I feel pretty confident about our ability to set something up and triage people. I’m leaning towards an attack of some kind, but I think I should discuss this with Commander Sinclair. Any deficiencies in our processes you’d want to refine in all of this?”

“Any crew can almost always use a tune-up on chain of command and teamwork in a crisis. There’s a quality or ability which I can’t really name- but in the case of this ship being under attack, looking at your friends and deciding whether or not you can save them.”
