Drake was on his way to the CO’s ready room. He had gotten a page a day before, telling him where to be and when but not much else. He didn’t know why but supposed that Command- Captain Myqian didn’t have sufficient time to include that. Nonetheless he moved through the halls and over towards the Captain’s ready room. He was glad, in a way, if there had to be someone else in that office, that it was someone he knew on some level or another. Maybe it shouldn’t have mattered, but it did. He reached the door and pressed the chime.

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

“Come on in,” Dira said, her voice sounded neutral through the door comm.

An office space said something about the occupant and Dira’s was no different, though she hadn’t been in there very long. To the right of the entrance was the captain’s desk, a couple chairs for guests, and a replicator tucked into the corner, while a sitting area took up the space in front of the an expanse of windows opposite the main door. The sitting area comprised of a navy blue sofa that had a gentle curve to it. On each side of it, nestled between the windows and where it curved out was a side table with a potted plant. One had trails of forked leaves and the other had tall dark green stems lined with alternating heart shaped leaves that had a blue hue.

Other small touches had been added that were Dira’s, though only a few so far. Aside from the plants, there was a round and squat pot in a deep blue colour with sweeps of white and green paint. It sat on the shelf behind the desk, along with a picture of an older brown skinned woman with a heart shape face, natural black kinky curls not unlike Dira’s, and the dark eyes of a Betazoid. On the other side of the pot was a brown skilled Haliian man with a greying moustache, short dark hair and a receding hairline that made his forehead ridges and bulges more prominent.

She was standing in front of her desk, holding a mug. Dira gave him a smile. “Ahh, Dr. Marshall, come on in and have a seat,” she said, gesturing behind her to the sitting area. “Can I get you anything?”

Captain Myqian, CO

Drake stepped in. “A cup of coffee would be greatly appreciated, Captain.” He looked around the office. “Good to see you’re settling into your office. How does the big chair suit you?”

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

She gave him a lopsided smirk as she moved to her replicator. “You would think having sat in the seat so many times over the years since I arrived that it wouldn’t feel different, but I’ll tell you something they don’t us in Command School: nothing is different and yet everything has changed. It’s very surreal.”

Drake nodded. “I’ve heard similar things from other COs. No feeling quite like it when its your own.”

Dira ordered the coffee and brought them over to the couch, and sat his down on the coffee table before taking a seat. She exhaled and took a sip of coffee. “I feel like my caffeine intake has gone up lately. Can’t be a coincidence.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Drake sat down and sipped his coffee. “I feel you. There are days I feel like more caffeine than human.” He set his coffee cup down and chuckled. “I swear, you Captains get better replicators than everyone else.”

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

She laughed, and it honestly felt good. “Well, don’t go telling everyone, or else I’ll never get a moment’s peace.”

“No promises” Drake joked.

Sipping her own coffee, Dira leaned back against the couch. “So, I’m sure wondering why I called you up here. Essentially, I have an idea brewing in my head that is very much in your department’s expertise and I wanted to pick your brain a bit before we take it to Walker and others.”

He nodded, intrigued.

“Based on experiences with the old Ogawa and now this ship, if we ran emergency medicine drills, what sort do you feel would be the most useful?”

Captain Myqian, CO

Drake pondered. He liked the idea. “The medical staff on this ship is… extraordinary. Their skill as the staff of a hospital is unquestionable. A true emergency drill can’t have too much forewarning, time to prepare. Half an hour, an hour. And then the drill team goes into a simulated triage situation. They’re outnumbered at least 5 or 6 to 1 by patients. The odds of organizing anything are slim. And there are impossible choices to make.”

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

She nodded slowly. “Are there any particular variables that you want to test within a triage? Particular injuries for example? Situations that might require solid collaboration?” In her head, she was starting to map out a much larger idea more solidly and it was starting to be a little bit exciting.

Captain Myqian, CO

Drake answered quickly. “If we’re talking about working the whole crew- I’ll pull from my own experience, collapsed mineshaft. Everyone has a job somewhere along the line to help get people out, to the temporary hospital, triaged, and sent to appropriate doctors if a specialist is needed.” After a momentary hesitation he continued. “If we’re just talking about the medical team- you want a Borg attack. The combination of injuries created during a conflict with the Borg will make people work hard, fast, and eventually as a team.”

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.
