Dira let out a raucous laugh. “Well, who am I to ruin the fun of some of the crew unnecessarily? I mean, they grapevine on this ship s very strong, as I know you know well.” Poor Willow. “They’re going to come up with stuff anyway, might as well make sure it’s real?” She chuckled and shook her head, laying back on the mat. Gazing up at the ceiling, Dira felt so strangely out of her depth even as everything was as it should be. But that was command, wasn’t it?
“Given some of what they come up with, I’ll pass on making all of it real,” Brad replied deadpan. Particularly the one rumor he’d heard that didn’t involve himself, that a couple of senior engineers had transformed a Jefferies tube junction into a bacchanalia.
“I’ll ask her, but we’ll see. It’s more than just us going away together. It’s a wedding. For my mother. It means meeting both my parents and a slew of extended family. No pressure…”

“I’ve obviously never gotten to that point myself, but as a regular attendee of weddings prior to joining the fleet, I saw plenty of people attend as dates of one or more of my extended family that I never saw again afterwards,” Brad offered. “She can be your partner today, that doesn’t necessarily imply permanence… unless you plan to catch the bouquet?”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffDira grinned. “That’s a Human tradition. No bouquet throwing at this one. But you’re forgetting one key variable here Brad…” She turned her head to gaze at him, her dark eyes glinting. “Most of the attendees are going to be Betazoids and Haliians… telepaths and empaths. Even if Zoi and I wanted to keep it to ourselves, everyone is going to know we are together.”
Captain Myqian, CO
“And?” Brad replied. “Like I said, being seen in public together once shouldn’t imply a permanent relationship, unless you’ve out and out told your family that the next time you see them you’ll have found The One?”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffHe didn’t know, but that was to be expected. Very few people on the ship did. Dira smiled, though it was a sad one. “Perhaps. But I’ve not brought anyone home to meet my parents since the last person, whom I was engaged to. I’m not saying that Zoi and I are there, but it is serious, so yes, my bringing her would be significant. Not because I’m a guest who brought a date, but because it’s me bringing someone home.” She didn’t even know if Zoi would be comfortable going, but she wanted to suss it out as an option before she mentioned it.

Brad made a ‘hmm’ noise and tilted his head first to the right, then to the left, as if he was trying to work out a crick in his neck, but otherwise remained silent.
Eventually, he did speak again. “Obviously, I’m not as qualified to dispense psychological advice as you or the XO, but my advice would be to take her if she wants to go. As many telepaths as will be there, at least you won’t have to actually talk to handle any questions?”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffIt didn’t matter that it was a mixed crowd and not everyone would be telepaths. The point stood. Dira shifted her position to a seated one, crossing her legs. She sighed. “You haven’t met my family,” she said, breaking into a lopsided smirk. “Ahh, well, you’re right. If it’s something we can swing command-wise, I’ll just ask her and see. It actually would be nice to have backup with me. My parents are great, but oh some of the extended family that will be there. Busy bodies, the lot of them. If I lose it and commit a crime, you’ll know why.” Dira actually laughed and it felt rather nice.
Captain Myqian, CO
“Ah, well, we’ve all been there,” Brad laughed back. “Anything to cause enough of a distraction to let you escape. I’m sure Zoi can whip up a smokebomb.”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffThat made her laugh more. “Well, having her with me might really work in our favour.” Dira inhaled deeply and smiled. “Well, That’s about enough stretching. I have to get up to the bridge pretty soon. But it was nice chatting with you, Brad.”
Captain Myqian, CO
“You too,” Brad said. “We should do it again sometime.”

Chief of Staff
Dira pushed herself to her feet and gave him a smile. “Yes, we should. I have a feeling my workouts are going to feel even more vital in the coming days and weeks.” She turned her wrist gingerly. “And hopefully it’ll keep getting easier.”
She gave him a bow of her head. “Have a good day, Brad,” she said before leaving the gym.
