“Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do,” she said with a grin, though it faded ever so slightly. It wasn’t at al him, but more the sudden unsettled feeling that flowed in her. The triggered memory was enough to make her take a deep sip of her wine. “How soon after you were healed did you go out sailing again?”

“About a week.” Achilleas said with a laugh. He didn’t pick up on Dira’s slight change in mood. “I’ve learned from an early age that anything traumatic needs to be faced as soon as possible. Confront the fear before it has a chance to settle in. I wasn’t afraid of going out solo per se but I was very conscious of the weather and getting the rigging done at the first sign of the weather changing. I did not have any complications on my second outing. Even caught a nice big fish that lasted me a few meals.”

She grinned, allowing the image to come to mind. “I agree that if the situation allows for it, it can be good to face that fear. I’m glad you were able to find a way to deal with the situation and keep enjoying sailing.” It didn’t work in every context though, that much she knew from her years in practice. Trauma was a very individual thing. Dira downed more of the wine and with it the subsequent thought that came to mind.

Achilleas nodded in return then took another drink of his wine. He didn’t have anything further to add at that moment so he quietly enjoyed the company of another person. With everything that had been going on it seemed as if quiet moments were tightly rationed or not given at all. He looked into the redness of the wine in his glass and mulled over some thoughts. “Do you think there is a grand plan in place for everyone’s lives?” He asked quietly. “If there was someone…” He waved grandly around them. “Setting my course and destination through life, I think I’d like to meet them and bop them on the nose.”

She couldn’t help it- Dira burst out laughing hard, almost to the point of tears. “Me too!” she said, laughing some more.

Achilleas couldn’t help but join in with the laughter, it was infectious. Would they need a doctor to cure them of it?

Catching her breath, she shook her head. “Both my parent’s people have deep spiritual beliefs and a lot of my life has been informed by them, but I don’t know if I fully believe in Fate or some sort of preordained plan. I think though that there is enough enough we can’t explain in the galaxy that there is room for mystery. But yes, a little less trials that make you tougher would be nice right about now,” she said dryly.

“It is why I’m here, the mystery still abounding in space and our universe.” Achilleas said with a smile. “My family wasn’t spiritual or religious and it wasn’t until joining the Ogawa that I was exposed to the idea of belief in a higher power beyond a vague whatever. Which is strange when you think about it because we know the Q Continuum exists and the Prophets in the Delta Quadrant wormhole, but is there something even beyond them? Who really knows.”

She sipped her wine, giving herself a moment to think about the deeper truth as she saw it. “The way I like to look at it is, if there really is some greater power putting things in motion, we as individuals still have to make choices. We still create a path forward, for better or worse, and how we get to that destination depends on those choices. There’s no correct way to get to the destination either, so it’s about our experiences along the way. the more we experience, positive or negative, the more rich of an understanding we build along the way.”
