Achilleas nodded and lifted his wine glass in a toast. “May our home be safe, our family ever curious, and our glasses perpetually full.”

“A’ha’ani,” she said, raising her glass, her words translating to ‘may good fate flow’. Dira took a sip.She had noted his discomfort and understood that he was still working through a lot of stuff related to his time away.

“So you said your grandparents are now supportive, but what about your father? What does he make of your career?” Myqian asked.

Achilleas took another drink after the toast then leaned back into the couch and propped his feet back onto the table. “My dad has a hard time being emotionally available, whether it’s for positive or negative emotions. Being the oldest meant he had expectations placed upon him and with the death of his siblings he took that far more seriously. This is what my mother told me anyway. I’d like to think he has been supportive in his own way. For instance before I left for the Academy he sat me down and said, ‘You were not brought into this world to be mediocre. If this is to be your path then be the best at it. The Academy brings in a lot of the brightest people from the Federation and you will stand out from them all.’” He chuckled with a bit of mirth as he rubbed his face with a hand. “I’m honestly not sure if he meant to inspire me or put a crap ton of pressure on me.”

“Hmm, yeah, I can see that. Sometimes the pressure isn’t intentional, but it’s there anyway. Do you feel inspired by it?” she asked. Dira herself didn’t believe in exceptionalism. Everyone had their own unique gifts and talents. Just because they didn’t show them off in some societally flashy way didn’t make their contributions less than.

Achilleas shrugged. “I don’t know. I like to think that I’m doing the best that I can but that doesn’t necessarily make me the best, just the best me. That’s going have to be enough because I can’t do more than I already am.”

She smiled widely at him before she sipped on her wine. “I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s a very balanced way to approach it. No matter how much some parents may want the best for us, they don’t always see how their words might hinder rather than help. You said your father is an olive farmer? Is he still doing that?”

Captain Myqian, CO

Achilleas took another sip of his own wine before he responded. “My oldest brother and is wife have taken taken over the majority of the work leaving my dad and mom free to do whatever they’d like, but they still help out during the busier times. My grandparents do as well but their contributions are more experiential.” He paused his thoughts as he noticed his glass and Dira’s were empty. So he set his glass down and hefted the bottle to refill it before he turned to Dira and motioned to her glass. “Would you like a refill?”
