“Honestly, I just wanted to see how the self care was coming along and how you were adjusting to the changes.” She gestured to the slippers. “I’m glad to see you took my advice, though I wouldn’t have pegged you for a bunny slipper person. I do enjoy surprises.”

Achilleas took a drink of his wine before he returned a bright smile. “These slippers.” He wiggled a foot for emphasis. “Are insanely comfortable. If I could hygienically wear these around the labs I’d very seriously consider it. Additionally I was given these when I entered the Academy from my fourth sister, she’s eight years older than me, and I had originally balked at the gift until I tried them on. I did get teased quite a bit by some of my dorm mates but once you go bunny slippers for around the room, you’ll never go back.”

She laughed, utterly delighted. “And they are sentimental too. Always a great reason to just tell others to join the club or get lost.” Dira shook her head, still grinning. “I don’t have any siblings, but my father is a very sentimental person and enjoys finding gifts for people that are exactly what they need but never see coming. It’s a talent of his.”

He chuckled a bit wryly. “Each of my siblings, the twelve of them, gave me a ‘leaving home’ gift. These are the only one I brought with me after the Academy. Oh actually that’s not true!” Achilleas sat his wine glass down and got up excitedly. “Just a second!” He said over his shoulder as he ducked his head into a closet. After a a moment of rummaging he emerged carrying a carry case of some sort. He returned to the couch and carefully opened the case to reveal an antique telescope. “This was given to me by my grandparents before I joined Starfleet. Sometimes I’ll go to the holodeck with this and look at the stars as they’re seen from Greece at that very moment.”

Dira was utterly taken aback even as she gazed at the beautiful telescope. “It’s a truly lovely gift and I can tell it means a great deal to you,” she said with a smile even as her mind tripped over a few of his words. “Wait, did you say twelve siblings? So there’s thirteen of you?” For an only child it was nearly impossible for her to imagine growing up like that, if that was how it had been, and she didn’t want to make assumptions.

Achilleas nodded as a knowing grin crossed his face. “Yup! That is about the usual response I get. Without going into too melodrama, my aunts and uncles passed during the Dominion War which left my father as the only surviving child of my grandparents. He was forbidden from joining Starfleet as the oldest child because his responsibility was to take over the olive vineyard back home. Which was perhaps for the best considering. He didn’t have nearly as many siblings as he had children so I always wondered if he was making up for the children they might have had. As the youngest I was pretty much given the freedom to choose my path even if my grandparents seriously tried to dissuade me from joining Starfleet.”
