Dira spun her chair to face the low shelf that spanned most of the back wall where the replicator sat adjacent. She smiled deeply. “Yes. That’s my mother Sesara and my father, Kesren. She’s a neuroscientist and he’s an a multi-media artist. It made for a fascinating childhood especially considering that espite divorcing when I was six, they are still very great friends.” It was clear she adored her parents.

She rose and gestured to the sitting area on the other side of the space. “I have time to chat,” Myqian said, moving over to the sofa and sitting on one side. “What’s on your mind, Doctor?”

“I can see a piece of each of them in you,” Surra said with a smile. She walked over to the sitting area and then said, “I stopped by to see how you were holding up. I expected a visit from you after you were cleared to leave sickbay…after the incident with William Franks.” She sat as she continued, “I guess with the sudden departure of Commander Taylor and you taking command of the Ogawa, you were preoccupied with your new duties.” Surra was opening an excuse door for her, but she hoped she wouldn’t take it. If Dira did not want to talk about what had happened to her now, then Surra wouldn’t force it. However, she would recommend a visit to her office in a few days so they could talk about what happened. Either way, they would have to talk about it. “I know you have strong cognitive abilities but I do wonder how you are managing to juggle everything you have to do both administratively and most important mentally.”

Dira was quiet for a moment before she drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I mean, it’s a lot to wrap my mind around. I expected to be a captain one day. I didn’t go into Command excepting otherwise, but I thought it would be after a long time as an XO. I didn’t expect it so soon or on this ship. And… Willow was my really dear friend, Surra, and I miss her. I’ve been in Starfleet a long time, but this part never gets easier. So I’m doing my best to adapt while also making sure the crew feels like everything is well under control. They need that. And Commander Sinclair is proving to be great, so we’re finding our flow with each other and that’s at least not a concern I have.”

Surra nodded. Naturally, Dira was concerned about the well-being of the crew, however now more than ever she needed to focus on herself. “Have you taken time out for yourself? It can be easy to bury ourselves in our work, but what we really need is a moment to heal from our past. A lot has happened, Captain Taylor left, and before that, you were taken hostage. Have you opened up to Commander Sinclair about what happened to you yet? I am not suggesting you do it right away, but I think eventually it is something you should do. He needs to understand the pressures that are on your shoulder as your command partner.”

Her jet eyes held Surra’s gaze evenly. “We haven’t gone into details, but he has all the reports on everything. And he know I was close to Taylor. We are… on the same page about making sure we’re working as a team. And now that he is here, I might actually have an opportunity to take that time for myself, but I’ve been managing,” Myqian said simply.

“Respectfully Captain, reports are not the same as the first-hand account.” One of the hardest parts of the job was being straightforward with the crew, especially the Captain. “I would suggest that you actually sit with him, when you are ready of course, and tell him what you have been through. I understand that doing this will put you in a vulnerable situation with your first officer, so before you do that though, I would like to have a few meetings with you to prepare what that might look like or feel like.” Surra smiled as she remember she’d opened up to Dira during a vulnerable time in her life. “Have your telepathic abilities been bothering you lately? I heard that Kane had made some type of device for you. Was it to help manage your abilities?” She asked, recalling at one time they had become overwhelming. She wondered how Dira was keeping them under control with everything she had going on.

Her unease was something that seeped out of her but Dira didn’t try to hide it this time. “It works, and there are no side effects so far.” Myqian pursed her lips. “And I will continue testing it for awhile, but only for short periods of time. After the testing is done, it’ll only be used when I feel my ability to function is compromised and I need the telepathic relief. But, especially given recent events, I dislike not being aware of my surroundings and I don’t intend to go out of my way to put myself in a vulnerable position again where I don’t need to.”
