Royal thought for a moment and then shrugged. “I honestly don’t know. It feels different… but I don’t know if it is something I would have done if I wasn’t pushed. Captain Knight on the Saracen made me apply, basically.” and he laughed. “Not to say I am not looking forward to the assignemnt, mind you. And I will damn sure do my best at every turn. But would I have gone this route on my own?” and he shrugged again.

She considered this as she ate her salad. “The way I have to see it over the year is that we rarely make large changes unless something or someone shows us it is something that possible or necessary. For better or worse. And if it’s going to be a meaningful change, then we ultimately have to choose it for ourselves and commit to it if it’s to be something that helps us grow in some way. For you, it was a some one, for me, a something. But no one forced us to make this leap. We still had to take it ourselves.

“Too true.” he replied and took a bite. He regarded her for a long moment and then took a drink and said “How are you feeling about being saddled with a never-before First Officer? And please… be honest. We’re gonna hafta learn to be open with one another if this little team is gonna be effective.”

She gave him a grin and set down her fork, folding her arms on the table and leaning in a little, her dark eyes intense. “Royal, I was in the same position only three years ago. How can I begrudge your newness in the position when it was me not all that long ago. Now, Captain Taylor trusted my experience and my record and then trusted me to learn, ask questions and figure things out. And that is exactly what I’m going to do for and expect of you. Fair?”

“Fair.” he said with a nod.

“But let me turn that back on you. How do you feel about being a first time XO on a ship like this. Where do you think the pain points will be?”

Royal thought for a moment and then said “As far as the ship goes, I have no concerns. And from reviewing the records, the crew is simply fantastic. But pain points… well, for one it will you and I. It’s going to take time to get our rhythm, anticipate one another… really mesh. That will tax us at times, for certain. I do not doubt that we will become a good team… but the process of getting there will have bumps. We just have to ensure the bumps don’t derail us. After that? It will be the crew adjusting me. My Command style… my expectations. I am not a ‘my way or else’ kind… but I do expect some things to be done a certain way. Once the crew has that down, I think we will be alright.”

She nodded. “I think as you meet with everyone, it’ll be easier to establish your expectations. They know mine already, but those will shift somewhat with you being the point of contact for many. And I know for myself it’s going to take some time to get used to people going to you first. But I don’t want to feel out of the loop. Surprises happen, but I don’t want to find out about them far down the line when everything has blown up bigger than it needed to.” Dira picked up her spoon and dug back into her soup.

“I asked you questions. Do you have any for me?” she said lightly. It was only reasonable, after all, even though she knew it meant certain things potentially.

He was quiet gorgeous a moment and then said “Expectations of me. What do ya have? And how do you see this team-” and he pointed back and forth between them, “- set up and working once we get our rhythm? Because I know you and Captain Taylor had a solid repartee… but I’m not you you aren’t her.”
