He smiled and said “I’ll nae be bragging when I say this, mind ya… but I was really good. If I’d have gone ta play for a club, I woulda played for the national team. And when that woulda happened, I wouldna wanted ta stop.” and he shrugged. “I made the choice, and as much as I thought I would have… I don’t regret it. Not a’tall. I like my job, the challenges and the daily grind included. I would’na trade it.”

Dira nodded with understanding. “I get that. I grew up with a lot of freedom to explore, so I don’t think my parents were surprised when I chose a life off-world, even if Starfleet surprised them momentarily. I never regretted my choice, either,” she said, scooping some of her soup onto her spoon. It had bene awhile since she had had it, and even replicated it was lovely.

Sinclair said “So tell me about ya, Dira. How did you come ta be here? And is Captaining a starship what you have always wanted to do? Or did ya nae take a shot at professional sports, too?” and he chuckled.

She laughed. “Oh no. I love adventure and being outside but sports were never something I gravitated towards of casual recreation. Though that one time I broke my radius white-water kayaking might have gone better had I taken a bit more seriously,” she said with a grin and a shrug.

Myqian ate a bit of soup and continued. “No, I went to medical school and when it was time to pursuing residency at Starfleet Medical, I chose psychiatry. I was a trauma specialist and this was at the end of the Dominion War, so you can imagine the time that was. But I never set my sights on Command until much more recently. In fact, the Ogawa is my first role outside of being a therapist. Hence why I was so surprised they gave me Command so soon. I’ve only been XO for three years. It feels longer than that, but all told I still feel a bit new at this, even though I know this ship inside and out.”

Royal smiled and said “Well, I been an XO all of three minutes and it feels like years.” and he laughed. “Honestly… if someone would’a told me at eighteen I would be a Command officer on a starship, I would’a laughed right in their face. And if they had come back and said it again after the Academy? Same result. It’s… surreal… to me sometimes, how I ended up right here. And there were more than a few pissed off faces in my Command class when it came out I was headin’ ‘ere.” He took a drink and then smiled. “I loved every minute of it.” he said with a wink.

She grinned. “I don’t know if it similar for you, but Command just felt like the right next step. I had never even considered it before, but then I was in a situation where I had to be in command and make tough decisions and it just felt… right. After that, I did my training by distance and then I ended up here.”

“You know, I was very fortunate. My mother is a neuroscientist and my father is an artist. They thought it was important to raise me with both science and mystery and the beauty of everyday life, and were supportive of whatever I wanted to pursue. They did not, however, love my timing of joining Starfleet,” she said with a grin. “I can’t blame though. Even though the war was officially over, there was that looming sense that anything could happen at any time.”

Royal thought for a moment and then shrugged. “I honestly don’t know. It feels different… but I don’t know if it is something I would have done if I wasn’t pushed. Captain Knight on the Saracen made me apply, basically.” and he laughed. “Not to say I am not looking forward to the assignemnt, mind you. And I will damn sure do my best at every turn. But would I have gone this route on my own?” and he shrugged again.
