She rested one arm on the table as she sipped on her sweet, warm soup, enjoying the tart finish. “I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, though don’t think I wont,” Dira said with a grin. “I try to keep up with my reading, especially as I was trying to maintain my license. But I agree with you that a multi-faceted approach in almost all areas of a star ship tends to work best. I think you’ll find Lieutenant Haven agrees with you too.”
“I think you’ll find that our tactical needs are less than most other ships, but we must never drop our guard and forget that we have to defend ourselves and those under our care. The Ogawa gets crew from other ships needing special medical or mental health care, on top of whatever visiting crew and civilians we have and whatever mission we are on. I’m going to rely on your expertise as a tactical officer, in conjunction with Haven, of course. I can approach tactics from a psychological view, but I’m not afraid to admit that I’m an avoid shooting whenever possible and that could mean I’m not seeing an action that needs taken well before it’s required.” Dira was going to be open about her strengths and weaknesses, and it was important that he knew what those were so they could compensate where necessary.
Captain Myqian, CO
Sinclair nodded in agreement and said “I am not averse to getting my hands dirty in defense of the ship or others, Captain. And while I know the Ogawa isn’t a warship, I can tell you from looking over our schematics and such that the ship is probably better equipped for combat than most people think. Offensively as a last resort, of course… but the capabilities for asymmetrical warfare are there for sure.”
Sinclair, XO
“Yes, we’re designed to act as a combat support tender, so we can be where people need us to be. We were involved in a refugee situation not that long ago, and while we didn’t have any issues, had anyone shown up with issues with us being there, things could have devolved faster than we would have liked. This new ship is far more capable than the previous one.” These details of that mission on Unroth had been a lot, for everyone, and she was thankful they hadn’t had to deal with any violence. Just that wished upon the documentarians roaming the ship and planet.
She smiled at him. “And call me Dira. We’re off-duty… enough.” Myqian chuckled and dug into her salad.
Captain Myqian, CO
“Only if ya call me Royal.” he said with a smile. “So… the varied postings of a definitely unique career path are done. What else would ya like to know, Dira?”
Royal
Finishing her bite, she braced her elbows on the table and rested her chin on folded hands, her dark eyes studying him. “Okay, Royal, what made you walk away from rugby?” It seemed a question she could ask now that they were officially on a first name basis.
~Dira
The question caught him by surprise. “Wow… ya really did read ma file, didn’t ya?” He took a drink and set the glass down. “My Seanair… my granddad. He was a Fleet Marine. I wanted ta be like him my whole life growin’ up. He was the best person I have ever known. Almost enlisted in the Marines, too. But he told me ta go a different way.” He smiled a grief-touched smile. “He woulda been real proud had I played professionally, for sure. He never missed a single match I ever played in. But he always wanted me to be the best me I could be. And to do that… for me… I needed to be more thana rugger.”
Royal
She gazed at him curiously, noting the surge of emotion, knowing what it felt like to lose someone so vital to your life. This recognition shone in her eyes. “Do you think rugby would have ultimately been a limitation? You couldn’t have, say, done both? Done rugby and then applied for the Academy when your time was done?”
~Dira
He smiled and said “I’ll nae be bragging when I say this, mind ya… but I was really good. If I’d have gone ta play for a club, I woulda played for the national team. And when that woulda happened, I wouldna wanted ta stop.” and he shrugged. “I made the choice, and as much as I thought I would have… I don’t regret it. Not a’tall. I like my job, the challenges and the daily grind included. I would’na trade it.”
Royal
Dira nodded with understanding. “I get that. I grew up with a lot of freedom to explore, so I don’t think my parents were surprised when I chose a life off-world, even if Starfleet surprised them momentarily. I never regretted my choice, either,” she said, scooping some of her soup onto her spoon. It had bene awhile since she had had it, and even replicated it was lovely.
~Dira
Sinclair said “So tell me about ya, Dira. How did you come ta be here? And is Captaining a starship what you have always wanted to do? Or did ya nae take a shot at professional sports, too?” and he chuckled.
