Dira chuckled as she sat up and crossed her legs. She braced her right hand on the floor, twisting in that direction gently as she used her left hand on her right knee to add torsion, letting each exhale to deepen the twist. “I’ve loved my walkabouts. I still intend to do them, though we shall see if the change in pip changes anything. It shouldn’t be people can react in unexpected ways.”

“You might find yourself with a couple extra shadows while you do it as well,” Brad pointed out. If he was the COS, especially as close to Dira as Zoe was, he wouldn’t let someone use the opportunity to try another snatch op while she was away from the Bridge.

Chief of StaffIt should have been a comment that rolled off her, but it stuck Dira by surprise. She looked over at Brad, her dark eyes unreadable as she stilled the surge of unease within her. Almost reflexively she began to stretch out her left wrist some more, though it needed to be done after putting her weight on it and then pulling on it. “I am as safe here on this ship as I would be anywhere,” she said, trying to not sound defensive.

“Didn’t say you weren’t,” Brad said, “although given what’s happened, that statement might not be as reassuring as you intended it to.”
He finished his third and final set on the leg press and got up, heading for the squat rack.
“All I am saying is that your personal security may be given more weight now than it was before, lest anybody get any ideas about taking a second crack at playing ‘Hide the Dira.’”

Chief of Staffit should have been funny, and normally she would have cracked a smirk and given some deadpan comment, but words died on her lips. Dira shifted to her stomach, bracing her hands and toes on the mat. Did her now being Captain Myqian make that much more of a difference? “I suppose Lieutenant Haven might take steps. It’s her prerogative,” she said before pushing up into a plank. Doming her back slightly and pushing away from the mat, her body didn’t waver.
Brad silently loaded up the bar with twice his body weight and settled in underneath it. “It is at that,” he allowed, dropping into a squat and grunting as the weight settled on his shoulders.
“It’s also a sensible precaution to take, at least for a while, given the circumstances. That or develop some way of tracking you that doesn’t depend on the ship’s systems.”

“I think the likelihood of a second attempt is rather low. The incident was a very specific set of circumstances that isn’t going to be repeated,” she said flatly as she lowered herself to the ground and pushed her arms up straight to stretch out her back. Indeed, with the perpetrator a long ways away, she was happy not to even worry about it. Yes, there might be a testimony she’d have to give at whatever proceedings might possibly happen but she could do so over subspace.
