“Done.” Kane said flatly and pulled the artificial rib sections off the fabricator and sterilized them. He moved to the surgical frame and looked in. “Make sure her respirations stay steady.” he said to Alexis. He didn’t ask or look at her, he simply started.
Alexis tapped the controls and her readings switched to Frigga’s respiration and heart rate. While he worked, and of course Alexis watched what he was doing, outside of the surgical frame’s shield, Alexis started the IV for the blood transfusion she needed. Alexis would make a personal supply request for veterinary infusion units and similar items. It had been careless of her to not request them sooner. She sent Jana for an IV stand. they didn’t use them often, but they had them in emergency supplies. Frigga started to wake, and Alexis administered another half dose of sedative.
First, he pulled a orthopedic surgical kit from supply. Then he pulled, of all things, an engineering kit from under the bed. He rapidly combined the two into a kit that allowed him to drill small holes in the ends of the ribs, pin the broken pieces to the carbon nanotube plates, and then pin the plates to the ribs; approximating the edges so that the ribs could knit back together and be help permanently stable by the plates. The entire procedure took Kane about twenty minutes, during which he said nothing. But after it was over, he stepped back and said to Alexis “Check and see. If you like it, close her up. Osteoregenerator should knit the ribs in a few hours.”

Alexis peered through the viewer watching the ribs flex as the lungs expanded, making sure the carbon nanotube plates flexed just enough to allow the lungs to expand and contract. That they wouldn’t constrict. After a minute Alexis nodded, “They are good fit and flex just enough. Osteo-regeneration will finish fussing them together. Her ribs will have to be wrapped for a few days while they finish healing. Jt’nal bring me gauze and bandages.” The hum of the surgical osteo-regenerator could be heard as the cycle began and Alexis began the autosuture of the layers of tissue.
The incision sutured and the dermal regenerator working, Alexis wrapped the ribs and IV location. Xavier switched over to a pure air mixture on the mask. The first round of the osteo-regnerator finished and they were able to move Frigga to a recovery bed. Before they started the next one. Alexis put up a low power restraining field so Frigga wouldn’t get up when she started to wake up. It had been just under two hours since
her motherAlisson had attacked Frigga. Alexis sighed deeply and looked up from the biobed looking for Solomon.Alexis
Kane stood near the door talking to a Security detail. He took a breath and held up a finger and turned and walked over to Alexis. “You need to go see your dad. Right now. I’m going with them.” and he jerked a thumb at the security team. He put a finger to her lips and said “Don’t. Just… relax. This is normal and part of the thing. I knew it would happen when I put Allision on the deck. I’ll be fine. You need to go help your dad.” and he turned around and walked back to the security team who walked with him out the door.

Alexis looked from Solomon to the security team and back. She opened her mouth to say…something, but he stopped her. No, he was right. This was procedure. He’d be confined to quarters until it was determined what had happened. But her dad? What happened to her dad? She looked from the door to Frigga to Kane. She had to stay, there weren’t…but her dad. She nodded, “Okay.” Then he was gone. “Xavier! Bring me a PaDD.” She turned back to the biobed programming in several vitals and thresholds. She then connected those to the PaDD so she would be alerted as well. “You stay here with her until I come back. You or Jana. Get Dr. Bryson to come too.” Dr Bryson was the PT that Frigga always worked with. She would recognize her when she woke up. “Dr. Bonner?” Jana asked, “Why did security take Cmdr Kane?” Alexis didn’t gossip, but she glanced at Frigga. “He stopped and restrained the woman who attacked Frigga.” Xavier muttered a fierce, “Good for him.” Alexis ran a hand over Frigga several times and much to everyone’s surprise bent over and kissed the top of the dog’s head.
She moved back to the main bed and began to gather the different equipment and separate it between the veterinary kit and the surgical kit. “Jt’nal, I need these sterilized and then stored. Locker 19 is big enough to hold the surgical frame. Put it all in there and mark it veterinary supplies.”

A short while later, the doors to the Secondary Medical Suite opened and the brand new captain walked in with Commander Bonner at her side. For a moment Dira just paused, but then she carried on, her strides carrying her more quickly to where the canine lay on a bed in recovery. Dira was calm and collected on duty most of the time on duty, unless it was a moment that allowed for a more relaxed response. But this Dira right now openly showed emotion that was unusual. Tears pooled in her dark eyes as she came to stand beside Frigga. “How is she?” she said, trying to keep her voice steady.
