“Not so much, though I picked up a bit of lute playing over the years and I sing. I’m what my father calls ‘a dabbler’- I like to try lots of different things as it suits my mood. But coming from a multi-media artist it sounds a bit ironic,” she said with a smirk.

“But I’d love to hear you play, sometime. I always liked the rich sound of the cello. I find it very moving.” There was more to it than that but Dira wasn’t traipsing into that realm.

“I’m happy to put on a performance after I get back into practice.” Achilleas said with a laugh. “Have to start building up those calluses on my hands again. String instruments tend to be a bit harsher on the player until you got that built up protection.”

She laughed. “Yeah, I don’t have any of that at all. But I haven’t touched a lute of any variety in, oh how long has it been? Maybe five years? Probably more. I think it might be painful to listen to, so I’m happy to hear you, even if you’re still working on things.”

Achilleas nodded amicably. “I’ll let you know when I’m confident enough that I won’t be embarrassed, even if it’s not quite up to my standards. That’s the clash of being a scientist and a musician, where science requires exacting precision but music is a bit more about flexibility and changing interpretations. The analytical side of me is never satisfied but eventually that fades away as I get into the groove and just play.”

“It requires you to surrender a bit,” Dira said. “I think all art is that way… if it’s to be meaningful. Or at least that’s how I always saw it.”

She tapped her hands to the desktop. “Well, you have an office to move into, and I have personnel files to update and another announcement to make. We both have work to get back to. If you need anything, you know where I am.”

Achilleas nodded then stood to politely see Dira off. “Of course. Thank you Captain. I am looking forward to arranging the office and having it follow some semblance of order.”
