She studied him intently with her dark eyes. “Well, I have a bit of a personnel issue I was hoping you could help me with, given your expertise. As it happens, I’m in need of a Chief Science Officer, and since you held that position before, I though you might be interested in doing so again.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Achilleas blinked in surprise. He hadn’t been back all that long but he had had that very unproductive check-in with Kane after his return, so to find out the position had been vacated came as quite the surprise. His first impulse was to agree without reservation but his self doubt chose this moment to creep in. He was a good CSO the last time he had done it until the fungal relapse and his subsequent stay at Starfleet Medical for the last year. Could he do this job again? Solal was confident in his ability as a scientist and a leader. He broke eye contact and looked down at his hands. The same hands that had manically tried to hurt people when his relapse had first hit. He was cured though physically and mentally most of the pieces were put back together. Most.

She watched him, taking in the tells his body language revealed. But she didn’t say anything, giving him time to find his answer.

He closed his eyes and took in a big breath, slowly letting it out before he open his eyes again and looked into Dira’s. There was confidence in them that hadn’t been there yet during this conversation. “I am interested, yes. I have fond memories of my time in that role before and I’m already familiar with most of the staff. Though I hope Commander Kane sufficiently cleans out that office because I’m likely going to need to cleanse it with fire before reoccupying it.”

Dira chuckled. “Oh, the office is being dealt with, I assure you. He’s already out by now, I’m sure. And so you know, Lieutenant Kane will remain in charge of Research & Development and you two will work together, but he will report to the XO.”

“You mentioned the changes on the ship being offputting. Is there something you need in order to help make the adjustment smoother? I don’t want you to take on this position and be overwhelmed by the additional work. That wouldn’t be good for you, or the ship,” she said.

Captain Myqian, XO

“The work and the routine that comes with it would actually do me some good I think.” Achilleas responded with a thoughtful look. “I’m not sure what exactly is off putting for me other than just being back and some things having changed in my time away. My uh, trauma, from before has made me appreciate the familiar and the certainty of sameness. I think once I settle in and feel like I’m back in the saddle again things should improve. Though it might help if I didn’t feel like Solal was practically at death’s door, though I know Doctor Bonner is doing her best in his treatments.”

Sci Petrakos

She nodded slowly. “It’s really hard to watch someone you care about suffering. We can feel so helpless. And without a clear prognosis, it’s hard because you don’t know what to expect. I do hope his condition improves, but either way, as his friend all you can do is be there for him.”
