Kane was silent for a long time. He just stood in place, thinking. And then he turned and looked at Alexis.

“Lex…” he began, “… I have hated almost every single moment I have been here.” He knew the three other people in the room would know what he was talking about. “Getting here was pain. It was… indescribable pain. And getting through that just to wind up here seemed like some kind of sick joke. I have hated almost every moment, every person, every single instance of just existing here. It was always off. Just enough to keep me remembering that I didn’t belong here.” He tookna deep breath. “And then I met you. And you irritated me in a whole new way. And somehow, I really don’t know or care how, you made this place tolerable. And then you made it not suck. And then you made it amazing. And I would happily go through all if that again just be standing right here, right now, in the place… with you. I love ya, Lex. And I’ll love you and only you no matter what universe I’m in.”

He reached in his pocket and pulled out a ring… tiritanium, with a serial number on the inside. It was the part number from that first experiment they did together. He took her hand and slid the ring on her finger, squeezing it gently.

Kane

Dira smiled warmly at both of them before focusing on Bonner. “Alexis, what vows do you make to this person beside you?”

Captain Myqian, CO

Alexis stood there holding his hand for a long moments. Anthony refrained from joking about them giving her an emotional puzzle to solve. She’d get there, and he knew it was because of Kane. Frigga whined softly, something was going on with her two favorite people. Anthony bent down and patted her head to keep her quiet.

Alexis stared up into his green eyes. “Solomon, you messed up everything. My days were routine and my head filled with the next puzzle, the next research project, the next patient, the next theory. And then you had the audacity to tell me I was wrong, about chemical hazard protocol of all things. And suddenly things weren’t quite so dark any more. You asked me if all I wanted was work and I told you no, but no one wanted to deal with the way my brain worked. So you went ahead and proved me wrong, again. You challenge me, you question me, you make me a better doctor.” She paused for a long moment trying to find a way to articulate what she was feeling. That made her smile softly, “You make me feel things I don’t know what to do with. You put light into the dark. I will always irritate you, like Lucy irritates Ricky. I love you, Solomon. I would live an eternity in darkness for you.”

Alexis held a black metal ring in her fingers. She took his hand and slid it onto his left hand. Etched into it was two DNA codes. CD38 CCXX and CD38 ACXY. Hers and his. The genetic coding for a happy marriage. When the light caught the etching it was the same blue whit color as the light he had made for her. She held onto his hand. “Yours is always the only hand I want to hold.”

Bonner

She was moved by their words and the sincerity behind them and it took Dira a moment to speak again. “Alexis and Solomon, you have shared your vows before us witnesses and we wish a lifetime of happiness for you. By the power invested in my by Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, I hereby declared you married. Congratulations!” They had only one small detail to solidify and then she could file the paperwork that made it official.

Captain Myqian, XO

Kane looked at Alexis and said “Well… there we go. Done and done. Wasn’t so bad, now was it?” He looked at Myqian and said “Thanks, by the way.”

Kane

“You’re welcome, Dira said with utter sincerity.

“No, it wasn’t. Told you it would only take approximately ten minutes.” Okay maybe a little more because he decided they could handle the vows. Alexis turned to thank Myqian as well, “Thank you, Ca…”

“NO. No no no. No. Not Done and Done.” Anthony grinned rubbing his hands together, “Captain, you’ve forgotten the most important part. Now I know it’s a human custom, but the bride and groom are both human after all. I always knew Alexis’ mile stones would be as unique as she was,” he looked at Alexis and she had a really confused look on her face. Was he talking about ‘giving her away’? What was he going on about. Anthony continued his grin getting bigger, “Nugget some traditions must simply be followed because they have cultural significance.” He looked at Myqian and pointed at Kane, “He is supposed to,” and he pointed at Alexis, “kiss his bride.” The look on Alexis’ face was somewhere between embarrassed and dumbfounded.

Alexis

Dira grinned. “I’m aware of the tradition, and I agree that rituals have their place. I figured it was up to them,” she said with a wink at the couple. “But it’s common to seal your vows with a kiss in any cultures.” She was’t going to insist, of course. In fact, she was doing her best to both make this more than just some ordinary gathering, and not making it something they didn’t want.
