Kane looked at her and was silent for a long time. “You… are asking me… if I would prefer to work by myself and not have to hand hold everyone through every. Single. Small. Admin. Screw up. Ever? That is what you are asking? For f^#ks sake… its like you don’t even know me anymore.”

Having delivered her little spiel very matter-of-factly, her ebony eyes glittered. “What? You don’t just love negotiating with people on work schedules, and prioritizing projects and resources? Huh! Well, then I suppose I’m going to make your day then. Consider this an official shift in personnel. You’ll still be required to file a report but it will go to the CSO, and you’ll no longer have to compile that department report. Congrats!”

Kane looked at her and then said “What? What the hell are you talking about? I am the CSO. You want me submitting reports to myself now?” He pulled his feet off the desk and leaned forward. “Tell me the truth… are you drunk? Did they pin the pips on you got into the hidden shine stash the Ensigns in Engineering make to celebrate? I’m telling you… that stuff is not for the faint of heart. It’ll have you hearing colors and seeing sounds.”

Dira braced her elbows on the table and laced her fingers together and smirked. “I assure you I’m very sober. And I thought I was being very clear, but apparently not. So… Lieutenant Kane, as of today you are no longer the Chief Science Officer and instead you will remain as the section head for Research & Development. Yes, that is currently a division of one person, but that might not always be true. Do you have any issues with this we should discuss before it’s made official?”

Kane thought for a moment and then said “Yeah. One. I’ll work with, but not for the CSO. I’m not having someone who doesn’t have the background or the clearance telling me what I can and cannot do. Make my supervisor the XO. Agree to that, and I’ll promise not to blow up the ship and I’ll play nice with them both… most of the time. Unless they are stupid.... or they annoy me more than usual.”

Kane, ONLY R&D!!! WOO HOOO!!!

Given the complexities of his research and that it spanned multiple areas and departments, and given the potentially classified nature of some of it, his was not an unreasonable request. She shrugged. “I see no reason why we can’t do that. Consider it done.”

She rose from the chair and chuckled softly. “Enjoy the rest of your day. You owe me a drink later, but it might not be today, apparently my day is full already.”
