“At ease, Lieutenant,” Myqian said with a warm smile. “In fact, why don’t we sit and have a chat?” she said, gesturing to the navy blue sofa that had a gentle curve to it. On either side of it, nestled between the windows and where it curved out were a side table with a potted plant. One had trails of forked leaves and the other had tall dark green stems lined with alternating heart shaped leaves that had a blue hue.

“Can I get you something to drink? I’m minded to grab a cup of coffee.”

Maria’s posture relaxed a bit her arms dropped to her sides. She adopted a slightly more normal pose of sorts as she drew in the with of her feet to be closer. At the offer of a drink the woman looked thoughtful, before giving a small smile herself. “Cocoa, lukewarm if you wouldnt mind. I unfortunatly have no tollerance for hot drinks at all… I’ve burned and scorched my mouth too many times.... last time it took a month or two for my tounge to feel normal. I’m sorry… back to the task..” She blabed a bit the underline nervousness she felt showing through. It became quickly apparant that she had not had much dealings with senior staff before. She wanted to make a good impression but seemed very unsure of how to. She could almost remind one of a terrified bunny backed into a corner. She slowly and cautiously moved to the indicated couch. She gently sat to the far end. It was like she was afraid she might break the thing, or disturb the nice furnature. “Yes ma’am.” She responded finaly as the request for a chat prossed through her somewhat addled mind. Even though she sat, and tried to make herself small as possible, to take up the least amount of space.

Dira took the woman in for a moment before she moved around her desk to the replicator. “One jestral tea, hot, and one cocoa, lukewarm,” she ordered and watched the drink materialize. Joining Maria at the sofa, she set their drinks down on the low coffee table and took a seat , turning her body to face her new CE.

“You know, I remember when I was promoted to jay gee. It was my first posting after I passed my board exams and was officially a licensed psychiatrist. I was given my first starship assignment and while I wasn’t in charge of the department, there were only two other therapists on board. So I was new and we were the only staff for a crew of eight hundred. And my first appointment wasn’t even a formal appointment, but the XO stopping in to welcome me aboard. Which was so very kind of him. But I was so nervous that as I got him a glass of water, I wasn’t watching where I was going and caught the toe of my boot on the leg of the coffee table and dumped a bunch of water right now his front,” she said with a grin.

When the drink was set down on the table Marai reached out and took it. She looked down into the cup for a moment before taking a small sip. It was hard to see before she picked up her drink, looking at her hands it would have taken a effort to see the small shakes that were now magnified with the liquid in the cup, the poor girl was trembling a bit. Maria quickly put the drink back onto the table afraid that with the way she shook she would spill the contents. Hearing the story she blinked a bit and chuckled. “I could see that being some mishap that happened to me.” She seemed to relax just a bit, but it would take some coaxing. “I was supprised to hear that I was going to be the Chief Engineer.. I didnt expect it.. who would want a clutz like me. But I work real hard.” She chuckled a bit softer, and a little darker. “I guess I just really know how to get into systems like a little mouse..” She drew in a breath and then let it mostly out. “I’m sorry Captain… ma’am. I’m not making the best first impression…” She seemed worried, like the opinon of someone she had only known for a few minutes mattered to her. Truly she had and would not be able to show her work ethic, or how she would slave and drive at a problem until it was resolved, at least not yet. She gripped her hands tight infront of her as she stole small side glances towards the captain.

Dira smiled warmly and took a sip of her tea, holding the tea cup gently. “You’re in a new place, starting a new job, and it comes with a new rank and expectations. That’s a lot Maria, and it’s understandable that you’re nervous and maybe a little overwhelmed. I can promise you I’m not at all concerned. For starters, they would not have suggested you as a suitable candidate for the role unless you not only had the skills, but also the potential. I’m a big proponent of training first timers to a role. You have to start, somewhere, right?”
