“The audit and the bulk of the forensic analysis is still outstanding, but that’s only because we’ve been derailed slightly by our new assignment with the Kelakgh ambassador. She’ll be arriving very shortly. That and we lost out Chief Engineer. Things have been… a little chaotic lately,” she said with a lopsided smirk. “We’re just juggling priorities, as we often do.”

Sinclair smirked and said “Well, it wouldn’t be Star Fleet if it wasn’t a little chaotic.” He made a few notes and then looked up. “Ok. So what about personnel? Any issues? Conflicts? Is there anyone I need to watch out for?”

Dira couldn’t help the snort that erupted and gave Royal a wry look. “Well that’s the other item on my list. I have been doing some thinking and our current science chief is…not the people managing type. Lt. Commander Kane is a brilliant man, but dislikes people generally. I think had we had a better option at the time, he would have preferred to stay as head of R&D. Our previous chief has returned to the ship and I think it’s worth asking if Lt. Petrakos is interested in taking over the position again, freeing up Kane to focus on R&D. I’m sure he’d be quite thrilled.”

Sinclair gave her a quizical look, but shrugged slightly and said “Well, okay…”

She tapped her index finger on the table. “And that is next to the interpersonal conflict between Kane and our Chief of Psychiatry that showed itself in front of the brass. You can imagine I was less than thrilled. I’ve dealt with the situation initially, but it requires follow-up I’m still debating on. They’ve at least agreed individually to be professional around each other, and I’m not expecting them to be friends ever, but I think there’s room for improvement there. Even if Kane shifts away from his current department head role, he’s still a senior member of the science department. So I don’t feel comfortable leaving it as is. Though, honestly, maybe the space will help them both. Who knows.”

Sinclair leaned back and said “This… Kane, is it? Sounds like a difficulty. Are his talents really necessary to the mission? Why keep him on board?”

Dira drew in a deep breath. “It’s… complicated and classified, though I can fill you in a bit. The short story is that Kane is a Starfleet officer but not from our time or universe and is here by no choice of his own. His experiences and talents are wasted doing nothing and Starfleet assigned him to our ship hoping we could make it work. He’s bitter and abrasive, but if we’d had been through what he’d been through, we probably would be too. Taylor and I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and while he’s never going to claim to be a model officer, he’s good, Royal, and the situation involving him and Almikaz is not one-sided. I’ve been accused of favouring him by Almikaz, and yes, he and I are somehow friends, but I attribute that to simply the fact that I have compassion for his situation and his abrasiveness and anger doesn’t scare or intimidate me. That isn’t necessarily true for others.”

Royal stared at her a moment and nodded slowly. “Well… as the XO, I think I have the need to know the background there. Would you be averse to allowing me to request the access? And if the perceived favoritism between you and Kane is causing Almikaz hard feelings, maybe I can step in and be a buffer. Give you some professional space from Kane while trying to bridge that gap between him and her. Yes, its a deflection of sorts of course… but with your new role and responsibilities, massaging relationships like that may be too time consuming.”

Myqian sighed and nodded. “The irony is that the last time I found myself stuck in the middle of a situation that compromised me, I passed the decision to Taylor. I’m apparently the Captain now, so I need to be able to handle these sorts of situations, but I think you’re right with this one. My involvement just muddies it more because I’ve also been doing Kane’s therapy sessions, since I opted to maintain my license for the time being.” She tipped her head back and up and chuckled. “I don’t even know how that works now.” She turned her head towards Royal. “But yes, since the CO, XO and Chief of Psychiatry are the only ones allowed access to the classified portions of his file, you will be given access.”

Royal nodded and said “Alright, I think that will help a great deal. So what else ahould I take on as a priority? And are we going to have a Command staff meeting? Or should I schedule one-on-ones with the Department Heads?”
