Sinclair took a seat to her left and said “Well, I’ve actually had a chance to look at your file, Captain, so maybe it’d be a bit better if we start with me… you know, so ya know what you’re gettin’ into.” and he chuckled.

He tookna breath and said “My career has been… unique… to say the least. I started off in Security, that was my division out of the Academy. I was promoted after my Cadet cruise on the Challenger to Lieutenant JG and named the CoS of that ship. It 2as during my tenure there that I trained in some mediation and negotiation, and it was determined by someone somewhere that I had a talent for it and I should pursue training as a Counselor. I actually ended up getting a dual doctorate, one in Psychology with an emphasis on Counseling and one in xeno-sociology. I was then transferred to the Saracen as their Security Chief, but was then made their Counselor… and then the Chief Tactical Officer. After that particular merry-go-round, I applied to Command School.” and he laughed heartily. “I figured if I was going to be the Fleet’s token gap-stop, I may as well make myself as versatile as I can!” and he laughed again.

She laughed. “Nothing wrong with being well-rounded.” Captain. It sounded so strange to her ears, at least in being referenced to her.

“Well, I graduated a little over a week ago… and here I am.”

“Okay, then!” Dira said with a light laugh. “I mean, I had a little bit of time between completing training and this job but that was a few months, not days.”

Myqian leaned back in her chair. “I’m going to be honest with you that this is an unexpected transition. Not the least of which being my own promotion. But Captain Taylor was my dear friend and I haven’t really even processed her being elsewhere. It’s disorienting, but I’ve been focused on keeping the ship running. I suppose it means all those reports sitting around awaiting someone to do are now mine. Lucky me,” she said with a chuckle.

Royal looked at her and said “Ours. I know I’ve been here all of mere seconds, but I will insist that this is a partnership. My job is to support you and the crew, and keep the lines of communication open. If that means my first task is helping you tame the Mount Outstanding-Reports, then so be it. But I will be quite honest… if you try to do everything yourself I absolutely will glue your hands together.” and he grinned at her.

Dira chuckled, despite herself. Or maybe in spite of herself. “Well, I wasn’t planning to tackle it all on my own. I was speaking of the command reports that the new CO was going to have to do. You can have all mine,” she said with a cheeky grin. “But yes, I happy to share the workload. And we’re fortunate to have Commander Walker as Chief of Staff and Second Officer. The three of us should probably have a meeting once you get a bit settled and we can establish where we’re all at.”

He grinned at her and said “I’d love to take all those on, Ma’am, but the old XO never moved her things out so I’m without quarters or an office. Maybe as the new CO, you could have a word with them?” and he chuckled as he leaned forward and looked at her directly. “Listen… I am aware that this is a large adjustment for you. And I am here to help. Know that my time is yours and you have a sounding board in me, ok? I’ve never been an Executive Officer, but I have had several really good ones. And one thing I learned from them is that the Captain has to have an outlet. Outside of Counselors, or Command, or even spouses and partners. And a good XO is that outlet. The fact we are both trained mental health professionals should make this smooth as silk… or, of course, it will make us hate each other and you’ll fire me before the reporting period is over.” and he smiled at her. “Either way it will be a helluva experience!”

Dira inhaled deeply and let it out before she nodded. “I’m usually a pretty open person, and I don’t expect another pip to change that.” She was used to being the sounding board and she had no problem letting others be that for her, but it had been a bit disjointed lately. “I appreciate you being up front about it. Any other expectations you have?” Best they got those on the table right away.

He leaned back and nodded. “Aye. I expect you an’ I ta not always get along. Just how the nature of sentient beings in close confines for extended periods works. But in front of the crew, guests, and anyone outside you an’ I? We back each other up and are a united front. One, I believe that will ease the level of apprehension the crew faces right now with the significant changes they just had; and two, it will mean that when I say something the crew will know that it comes from both of us. Not gonna lie, that will make my transition much smoother. But outside ‘a that… it means that there is one Commander. You. I am simply an extension of that authority. If we have a problem, we settle it in private, behind closed doors. That way we don’t even unintentionally undermine one another.”

“Agreed,” she said with a soft smile. “It’s how it’s worked around here for the last three years, so business as usual there at least. I will also add that a pet peeve is finding out about an issues ages after it was first noticed. That makes it hard to sort out before it blows out of proportion. So we’ve been pretty adamant that department and senior staff meetings are the time to bring things to the table, even if they are minor. It’s not that anyone else needs to act on it, but that at least we have the information for context should the issue develop further. It saves a lot of running around and hearsay.”

Royal nodded and said “Absolutely. Mitigate at the beginning, respond as needed after.” He folded his hands on the table and said “Now… questions for me, Captain? Anything I should know about the ship, crew, mission… anything that I need to set as a priority?”
