Kane looked at her and said “I’ll take a breath. And I’ll call her out if she’s wrong as well. And not to be a d!<k… but I know she’d do the same to me if the need arose. So maybe we are setting an example. Nobody on this ships is under the assumption that she and I are buds. Maybe seeing some of their ‘Senior Officers’ dislike one another… hell, even hate one another… but still get the job done is a good lesson for them. Gods know there are enough officers in this fleet acting like we are all one big happy family. And that’s a straight up lie.” and he laughed once loudly. “At least there is the fact that she and I are honest with one another.” and he laughed again.

Dira snorted. “Well, I wasn’t under the delusion you’d be gossiping together and doing each other’s hair. But look, she’s not the right therapist for you but that doesn’t mean she’s not the right person for someone else. I know you’ve had a negative experience and I’m not going to discount that, but people can learn to do better. If they are willing.” It was a caveat that mattered and she was under no impressions otherwise

“Well then, that’s the question.” Kane said with a shrug. “But one you gotta ask, thankfully. Not me.” and he chuckled. “I hope ya can get through to her. I really do. And not for any other eason than it will keep her from treating anyone else like that.” and he shook his head. “But anyway… enough about her. How are you holding up?”

Myqian shrugged. “It’s like you said earlier, I survived,” she said nonchalantly. “I’m just glad he wasn’t able to do worse damage. I read the reports and about his shuttle boobytraps. Well done. It could have been a lot worse.”

Kane laughed slightly. “It could have been, yeah. The only real casualty there was my underwear. Do you guys pay for dry cleaning, by the way?” and he grinned at her. “I…” and he paused and took a deep breath. “I’m glad you are okay. I was… I was worried about you.”

Her dark eyes took Kane in and for several long moments she said nothing. It would be easy to just smile and reassure him and she could do that for sure, but for a brief moment there was hesitation. Oh, she hid the internal war well- her job demanded she focus her energy somewhere productive (or at least that’s what she was telling herself). Her lips moved to say something but her mind went blank. What was she going to say? That he didn’t need to have been worried? Ha! No, they had had reason to worry.

Her fingers tapped on the case containing her headband and Dira sighed. “He was on this ship for months.”

Kane looked at her through fallen hair for a long time. This was not his strong suit, but he said “How do you feel about that?”

Dira shrugged. “I’m not always sure, but I do know I’m grateful his intelligence didn’t match his resourcefulness. If he had figured out that Lieutenant Haven and I are together, things could have bene much worse. He assumed we were just friends,” she said, smirking slightly. “Then again, it’s not like he ever asked details about me. But I think had he found out he wouldn’t have abided the competition and I’m not sure how well that would have gone for her, Chief of Security or not.”

She lifted the case with the experimental headband. “Hesitant though I may be, I’ll try to do some judicious testing. Do you have a minimum amount of time you’d like me to wear it over the next week?”
