“Well, you’ve managed to get more than I did, and I spent the last couple days on the same ship with the man,” Brad said with a grimace. “His shrink or whatever that Counsellor is was very tight-lipped about exactly what it was he did to get locked up in the first place.”He took the PaDD and started browsing through the files there.
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffWillow’s lips pressed thinly. “Amoungst other unethical things the main thing he seems to have been charged with was genetic modification. That was what he was caught doing at least.”
Willow Taylor
CO“Probably just the tip of the iceberg,” Brad agreed. “I’m also quite skeptical of the claims that he’s seen the error of his ways.”
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffWillow glanced at a messaged that popped up across her computer and glanced at Brad. “Just you and me. Another situation has claimed.our XO for now. Ill fill him in.” Her expression remained hard. “Lets go.”
Meanwhile In the conference room.
Dr Jarvis’ gaze remained fixed out a window, however, his mind had wandered into the depths of his memory.
Blue blood covered his gloved hands as he raced against the clock to remove a shard of metal that had pierced all the way through the Andorian’s lung. While the surgery had occurred a long, long time ago, he could still recall each and every movement he had made with uncanny detail. A tap on the shoulder back in the outside world caused his hand to slip. Apparently, today at least, the Andorian died on the table.Jarvis turned to face Counsellor Pope, a sour expression on his face. He hated interruptions, especially when in the midst of a surgical re-enactment. “What is it, Counsellor.”
He received a reproachful look that he could tell had been in response to his own. “You wont win over anyone with that sneer.”
“I was not aware that I needed to ‘win’ over anyone.”
The portly man sighed long-sufferingly. “While Star-Fleet command have ensured you a position on this ship, you would do well not to antagonise your new commanding officer straight out of the gate. A good first impression will help ingratiate you to the Captain and hopefully help her see past the file she will have undoubtable read.” As he spoke, Pope gave Jasper a pointed look. “You need to make her see the exceptional doctor that you are and not the…”
“…not what,” Jarvis cut in, “the doctor who tried to advance our knowledge of medicine and genetics.”
“By carrying out practices that were both unethical and illegal, Dr Jarvis, “ Pope admonished. “You have a phenomenal mind, Jasper, and I strongly believe that the experiences of your youth are the reason that you lost your way. With the proper structure you could contribute something meaningful to the federation. Besides, the captain is a cardiologist, the two of you have that in common already.”
“Of course, Counsellor. I shall bear that in mind when the captain decides to grace us with her presence. However, I think I shall pass on using cardiology as an icebreaker. From what I’ve been told, she’ll likely not have seen a heart in years.” Jasper gave the man a smile that would have made children and some adults run for the nearest escape pod or airlock, whichever came first.
Dr J. Jarvis MD
“Indeed. Well youd be very much mistaken in that.” Willow’s voice responded as she entered the room. She did not look happy, infact if looks could kill then this would very likely leave …well a very nasty scar at least. Willow was not very tall and wasnt exactly the most intimedating of women but something of her expression very much said regardless of Jasper’s opinion of her medical prowess she was very much the one in charge in this situation. ” In addition, as your reputation more than proceeds you i would think it prudent to ensure first impressions were done well.”
She reached the table and walked to the head chair then sat. Leaving the chair to her left and right free “Gentlemen if you please.” She said indicating the seats that were left.
A yeoman entered then with a tray and some cups and began pouring coffee. She handed one to Willow who sat staring at Jasper. “For the record, and allow me to be perfectly frank both of you, i am not happy about this. I do not want you on my ship but here you are and im told i have to put up with it. But mark me the moment you so much as breathe out of the remit of your duties youll earn yourself a one way ticket to the brig.” She blew on her coffee. Emerald coloured eyes watching both men.

COCounsellor Pope wiped a sheen of sweat from his brow before taking the seat offered to him by the Captain. He gave Dr Jarvis a quick glance, trying to indicate that he should both sit and not react to her less than friendly welcome. “Thank you, Captain. As you are no doubt aware, I am Counsellor Henry Pope and this is Dr Jasper Jarvis. I thank you for taking the time to meet with us personally.”
“Yes.” Willow said turning her attention to Pope. “I know who you are counsellor and i am aware of Doctor Jarvis. Believe me the pleasure is entirely due to Admiral Davies. Had i my way youd be back on the ship bound for earth. However we need doctors for this mission.” She sipped her coffee.
Jasper sat down beside Pope and looked the short red-haired woman up and down before meeting her eyes, sharp blues locking onto emerald greens.
There it was. She felt as if she were being scanned with a tricorder. Immediately her mind shifted to another doctor whose blue eyes had a similar effect. Instinctivly her right hand rubbed over her clavicle on the right side a moment. Willow stared right back at him as if daring him to speak.
If the look she had given him was the best she had then he was sorely disappointed. He’d heard that star-fleet Captain’s were supposed to be fearsome. Although there was more than one method to dissecting a Denobulan. Perhaps she had found a way to be authoritative without the need to look like a Klingon warrior. Regardless, Pope had asked him to play nice and it would not do to send the woman scurrying to her own counsellor on only their first encounter. Especially if he were to become one of her… crewmates. The thought still burned him, however, it was either this or allow his mind and skills to rot back in New Zealand.
“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Captain,” he said with a smile. “Forgive my offhanded comment. I was merely suggesting that someone in your position may not have the time to spend on open heart surgery.”
Dr J. Jarvis M.D
Again she sipped her coffee. “I would assume someone in your position would likewise have found himself not able to spend time on such endevours.”
Watching Pope, Willow sighed and pushed a strand of her short red hair behind her ear. “Ok. Lets get down to this shall we. You have met Doctor Walker already. As chief of staff you will answer to him. You are not a starfleet officer Doctor Jarvis and frankly i would prefer you be left where they found you but as i said here you are and as you are here you will follow starfleet protocol.”
She waited to see if he understood.
Dr Jarvis nodded his head slightly but remained quiet. He would likely have more than one grievance with the Captain’s ‘expectations’, but knew that voicing them all here and now could potentially see him on his way back to New Zealand. While Pope had made arrangements with some of the higher up’s in Star-fleet, he had no idea how far this woman’s influence might spread. Clearly it was not enough to stop the placement as it stood, that much she had made apparent. However, he had not yet had a chance to digest the Star-fleet rulebook in its entirety and so did not know what technicalities may exist.
“You will follow the chain of command. You will complete a boarding evaluation with medical and psychiatry and if they deem you fit for duty you will be given a duty roster and remit.” She looked him up and down, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly as if his lovecraftian style attire amused her. “I will also have a uniform provided for you alongside a duty tricorder which will be recorded and monitored for each person you treat, if any.”
Jasper saw the smile she tried to hide and returned it with one of his own. So that was her angle, or at least one of them. Have one of her psychiatrists try and probe his mind and find some reason to deem him unfit for duty. If he’d been able to survive the past year with Counsellor Pope, one session with a starship shrink would be child’s play.
She glanced at Walker. “If Doctor Walker decides you’ll be spending your time on night duty in the secondary sickbay calibrating spare inventory then so be it but you will not, repeat not, be allowed near a surgical frame or a laser scapel until we deem it appropriate if ever. Am i clear?”

CObump Brandon and Iain
‘That wasn’t such a bad idea,’ Brad mused, keeping a stony eye on Jarvis. As it was, finding duty that technically allowed him to interact with people was going to be difficult. The restriction on keeping him out of surgery was also a prudent measure. Maybe he could be in charge of making sure everyone of the ship got their influenza vaccinations…
Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffJasper kept his expression neutral. He had not expected to be allowed to perform surgery, however, the thought of being stuck calibrating spare inventory was almost enough to kill his brain cells there and then. Pope apparently also had misgivings about this, although Jasper doubted it had anything to do with the duty being a potential hazard to his mental health.
“Doctor Jarvis, despite his transgressions, which, may I remind you, he has suitably atoned for, is a physician of the highest calibre. Surely it would be remiss of you to waste his talents on inventory management when the planet that you are trying to aid is in desperate need of medical practitioners.”
Dr J. Jarvis M.D.
Willow raised an eyebrow. “The nature of my mission is not up for debate here nor is it my place to discuss how much, if any…” Willow looked at Jasper. “…attonement Doctor Jarvis has done. In starfleet we follow.orders. my orders are to accept your charge and i have done so. He will now follow the orders given to him.”
She took another sip of coffee. “If either of you are unhappy then gentlemen i invite you to leave.” She stood again. “I have duties to attend to. Doctor Walker will help you get settled.”
She gave Brad a sorry dude but this guy creeps me out look and turned towards the door.
