Kane shrugged and said “I dunno. I never made anything like this before. From a fabrication and science standpoint, its pretty straightforward. It’s just like noise canceling technology… except for telepathy. Make an equal and opposite noise to cancel the incoming. Pretty simple. From a medical standpoint, I don’t see anything negative. It doesn’t feed the signal into you, it broadcasts it out so the noise coming in can’t be heard or felt. The only thing I would be worried about is developing a dependence. But also make sure that its use doesn’t inhibit your abilities when its not being worn. Other than that? Up to you.”

Dira inhaled deeply, letting herself mull it over. She carefully took the device off and studied it. “Honestly, I’m not even sure. Maybe a few minutes each day til I get used to the instant switch? I’ve only ever interrupted my abilities chemically and while there’s no permanent damage, it’s… not always comfortable. Being able to slip in and out of my telepathy when crucial could make a huge difference.” She offered Solomon a smile. “I suppose we’ll keep this quiet since experimentation on people usually comes with a ton of paperwork,” she added with a wink.

Kane shrugged and said “Sure… but only if you are trying to get published or something s#!t. This is just a doctor helping someone. That’s what we’re supposed to do, right?” He picked up the oddly modified tricorder and ran it over Myqian’s head. “Well, everything seems identical to before. Keep a journal of when you use it. How it feels, what you are sensing around you with it off and on, any headaches or side effects. I’ll read your entries and make notes, and if we need to make adjustments we can. How’s that sound?”

She nodded with a soft smile. “Sounds doable.”

Dira held the band with delicacy and pressed it to her chest. For a moment she wasn’t sure what to say, just that she needed to say something. “When I was a teenager, not long after my abilities surfaced, I went through a period of time where I became almost agoraphobic. Even my parents thoughts hurt. Building shields and learning to raise and lower them is sometimes a difficult process. I took to my room, refused to go to school. I missed a whole term actually because I couldn’t bear to go out. I had thought once I mastered the basic skills that it would just be… easier, but lo and behold, my mixed genetic create this seepage issue. Most of the time it’s fine, it doesn’t bother me after so many years. But sometimes when we’re in an intense situation, like on the starbase with the hallucinations, or down on Unroth with the refugees, I feel just like my teenage-self again, hiding in a dark room waiting for the pain to go away. So… thank you. I know it’s not a big deal to you, but it is to me.”

Kane looked at her through the waterfall of hair that perpetually covered most of his face. His face held the same glowering, almost predatory look that he usually wore. The look the Science officers referred to as ‘Resting Kane Face’. He didn’t say anything for a long moment, and Myqian could feel the slight hesitation from him before he said “Happy to help.”

She gave him a small smile and inclined her head. There was nothing more that needed to be said. “I’ll stop by with my journal in a few days and let you know how it’s going, or if I encounter any issues.” Another incline of her head and Dira stepped out of the office.
