About ten minutes later, the XO slipped in and gazed at Kane with an air of curious expectation. “You came up with something a lot faster than I was expecting.”

Kane shrugged and said “Oddly enough, I got some help from someone I had never heard of. Had a sample of a mineral sent to me for analysis. Turns out, it inhibits the reception of extra-sensory input. I had some left over from the testing, so…” He reached into a desk drawer and pulled out a redwood box. It was inlaid with the Haliian symbol for ‘peace, and the border was a flowing Betazoid mosaic. He slid the box to her and said “Thats so it doesn’t look outta place in your quarters. Its also where you recharge the power cell. On full power, the cell will be good for about two or three hours. As you get used to it, you should be able to dial it back. Where I think the normal operating range for you will be should last eight to ten hours.”

She reached out and touched the box with her fingertips, admiring the delicate inlay and overall beauty of the box. He was right: it would blend into her quarters perfectly. For all his bluster, this was the side of Kane she saw more often, more than others perhaps. Pulling the box towards her, she opened it.

Inside was a thin metal band. It was a bright silver with swirling black and red lines in it, and was only a few centimeters wide. On each end was a what looked to be a small gold circle. Inside the band were dozens of small contacts. “Okay, so here’s how it works. Wear it like a headband. When you get it on, press both gold studs and it will turn on. The stud on the left controls power, the stud on the right controls frequency. When you get it on and activated, use the right stud first. You should hear a weird kind of droning,almost in the background of everything. Turn the stud until you don’t hear that sound. Then, turn the left stud until you dont pick up the input. Easy as that.”

Dira nodded. It was simple enough. She picked up the headband, which was rather light and she studied it from different angles. “How sensitive are the contacts? Will it matter with my hair or how I wear it? Or do I wear it more on forehead?” Her kinky curls formed a mass of hair that she either left loose or pulled up, but her hair texture changed how she could do things and she wanted to make sure she was testing the band properly.

“The closer to your skin the better. I took your hair into account and it should fit just forward of your hairline. You can come some over to hide it if you want. But even testing on your hair it should work, but you’ll have to bump up the power.” Kane said. “Here.” and he stood and came around the desk and took the band from her. He then set it across her eyes and over her ears, rotating it up to sit just before her hairline on her forehead. “There. That should do it. Let me know if its too tight, I can adjust it.”

She touched the sides with her fingertips more out of reflex than a need to see if it fit. She could tell it fit. Dira shook her head back and forth and it didn’t even slip a little. “Nice! Feels good. It’s much lighter than I was expecting. It’ll take me a few uses to get used to having something there outside of important holidays, but it’ll be fine.” She didn’t turn it on yet though, suddenly apprehensive.
