Several days had passed. Alexis had spent a lot of time with her dad, and he had joined them at least 3 times for meals. Alexis had also given him access to her quarters (she never used them anyway) because Allison was insistent that she wanted a divorce and that meant her father was not sharing quarters with her. That had been…a bit embarrassing for her father when her mother tried to draw security into it. Allison had tried to speak with Alexis several times, but a simple request to GALEN to keep all non-medical personnel away from her office was an easy fix. Or Alexis spent time down in the R&D lab working on some of her projects. Some of them she even shared with her father. Allison became less of a problem when she discovered the ship’s mess. There wasn’t a kitchen, but making use of some of Anthony’s replicator credits she made due. The crew at least was benefiting from her baking expertise.

Her father was going to be spending the night shift in the arboretum. Apparently there was a new night blooming plant, a Horsetail Nightshade, that he couldn’t wait to observe. He didn’t bother to ask Alexis to join him, knowing how much it would bother her. That night promised to be quiet and Alexis decided to cook. It had been awhile since she’d made burgers, and tonight she added fries and milkshakes. Lucy was already queued on the screen with the food ready to come out about the time she expected Kane to get back.

Kane walked in and took a sniff of the air. “You cooked? Smells great.” and he walked in and began taking off his uniform, pausing long enough to kiss Alexis as she prepared everything. “Let me change and I can help if you want.” He winked at her and walked into the bedroom.

A few minutes later a freshly sonic showered Kane, wearing a pair of shorts and a red t shirt that said “We Bargain Collectively Or We Beg Alone” on the front and “Union Strong” on the back in black lettering walked into the room and said “So how goes it? Talk to your dad at all? Your mom tried to come to the lab again. I think I may have to send out a quarantine notice on her.”

Kane

Alexis had just finished cutting potatoes into French fries. She turned to him and held out a long handled spider strainer and a pitcher. “Do you want to deep fry potatoes or make the milk shakes?” Everything was set out and ready to be thrown together. She turned back to flip the burgers. “I saw him at 1422 when I brought Frigga back after her last appointment. He is going to be spending the night in the arboretum.” Frigga, hearing her name padded over and sat, tongue lolling and sniffing the air around the table.

“Apparently, there is a Horsetail Nightshade in the arboretum and it’s going to bloom tonight. He’s excited.” Alexis was glad he had found something to do that he enjoyed. “It’s the closest he’s come to field work in years.” She set two plates on the counter and then a bun on each. “Today was decent. I guess my mother put all her effort into the science labs rather than medical today. As tempting as that is, we’d then have to explain to Dr Walker and then probably Cpt Taylor.” Alexis shrugged, “Of course she thinks because she’s a ‘scientist’s wife’ that she knows as much as he does. Leave out a vile of pretty colored, sweet aromatic perfume made from a hallucinogenic plant…let her ‘accidently’ get in the lab and she’ll pick it right up and inhale.”
