Following the tour from the new XO’s sister, Brad prepared to (finally) officially report for duty.

Making his way to the door of the Captain’s office, he straightened his uniform, put a smile on his face and ran one hand through his hair while the other rang the chime.

Behind him a woman in command red arrived, a stack of padds in one hand and a mug of something steaming that smelled of fruit in the other. She looked Brad up and down from foot to head and raised her eyebrows. “Doctor Walker i presume?” She smiled.

Brad didn’t jump, but he did start as he spun around, before noticing the four pips on the woman’s neck.

“Yes, Captain?” he replied. “I didn’t know you weren’t in…”

A smile tugged the corners of her mouth. “The lack of answer to the chime should have been a good hint.” She said her tone teasing and the professional manner dropping ever slightly. “Head of diagnostics but cant even workout the purpose of a doorbell honestly.” She was grinning now.

“Hey!” Brad said, adopting an affronted expression. “It just sits there, no response to diagnose from.”

She laughed.

He smiled back. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”

Balancing her PaDDs and coffee Willow stepped closer and gave Brad a one armed hug. “I’m so glad you could come. It has..its good to see you. Come in.” She moved to the door and stepped inside.

Brad followed and let the door slide shut behind them.

“You’re not gonna make me salute you, are you?” he asked with a smile on his face as he took in the decor.

Dropping her PaDDs on her desk she sipped her coffee and waved her free hand, her expression amused. “Dont be stupid. Of course not.”

The room was small and tidy, a bonsai tree, some books and holo frames alongside the fish tank were the main decorative changes that showed the room as occupied.

She waved at him to sit. “Can i get you a drink? How was the trip? Im suprised you managed to catch us up. Though maybe not too surprised. We did need to stop…plasma.eating gastropods…dont ask. I also hear the Hippocrates has a helmsman who thinks speed is a personal challenge.”

“And perhaps an engineer who has made a couple tweaks to their drive systems. We had a stop as well, pick up another new staff member whose shuttle had a breakdown. Honestly, we were supposed to beat you here by a couple of days, give me a chance to get a first-hand look at the situation planetside. I’ll take a sparkling water, dash of lemon, dash of lime,” Brad said, lounging in a seat opposite of WIllow.

“Is that the same tree you used to have in your office in San Fran?” he asked, indicating the bonsai.

Willow replicated the required drink and handed it over befor sitting opposite him. She glanced behind her at the tree. “Yup, the very same. Different pot however…i threw the old one at Doug not long before i left.” She said it as matter of fact as if people threw plant pots at ex fiances all the time.

Brad took a sip of his water. “Y’know, he still won’t shut up about that,” he said. “Also still thinks you’re going to give up this ‘spaceship command nonsense’ - his words, not mine, and come back to Earth and him any day now.”

Willow said nothing and instead frowned thinking of Doug.

“Did you have time to check out the lay of the land in theory at least?”

Another sip, followed by a grimace. “I did. And in theory, it’s about as bad as a pre-warp civilization after a major natural disaster, the only mollifying factors being the fact that they do have shelter, however tenuous, and power, most of the time. So they have some of the tools they need, most of the time, but far too much demand for those tools, and the people wielding them.”

Great willow thought.

Another sip. “Honestly, even with all the resources of this ship, plus the two new docs the Hippocrates was bringing especially for that clinic, we might be hard-pressed for a while.”

With a nodd Willow took a sip of her own drink. “Noted. We will be arriving soon. We can get a first hand impression from the team there, find out what they want and need and consider our approach. If we need to land the module to give us a hand then we can see about that.”

She sipped again. “How was the trip incidently?”

Brad let out an exasperated half-hour sigh and rolled his eyes. “Gods save me from young, eager, earnest young doctors attracted to ‘experience ‘!”

“Oh yeah experience was all they were attracted to. ” she smirked and his her smile in her drink.

He took a sip of his drink with one hand, running the other through his hair. “I’m almost old enough to be their father, but that didn’t stop either of them from coming on to me stronger than a Klingon bodybuilder on steroids. I had to spend half the trip hiding from them.”

This made her laugh out loud and choke slightly on her drink. “Oh dear. Do you think you can deal with them as part of the department?”
