With Alexis’s obvious hurt tone and swearing in Mandarin, Kane knew something was wrong. He pulled the micro-PaDD from his pocket and saw her leaving the Guest Quarters where her parents were staying. “Oh, of course. Great.” and he stood up from the desk in his office and stomped out the door and to the turbolift.

A few scant moments later, he was standing in front of the door to Alexis’s parents quarters, hair over half his face and a glafre that threatened to melt the very door he was looking at. He reached for the chime, stopped himself, pulled out the micro-PaDD and tapped a few commands. The door slid open and Kane stepped into the room and said with an edge only Kane could manage “What the f^<k did you say to Lex? Why is she spiraling?” to whomever was in the room.

Kane, Ticked-Off Fiancé

Allison was sitting on the couch, a PaDD in hand flipping through something with a wistful and pained expression on her face. When the door opened she assumed it was Anthony, but the force and sharpness with which the unfamiliar voice exploded into the room made the woman actually squeak. The PaDD dropped to the floor, her other hand came up and covered her mouth and then dropped over her heart as she stood and backed up against the arm of the couch. “Kane? What? Alexis?” She spluttered and then gave him a quizzical look as his questions solidified in her head. He sounded like he was accusing her of something. “What do you mean, what did I say to her? We were discussing your wedding, or I was attempting to.” Spiraling? Alexis didn’t spiral, she didn’t get emotional enough to spiral over anything. Not even an extremely difficult research experiment that didn’t go her way.

Allison

“Bulls#!t. What did you say? Exactly. The words, lady. What words did you use?” he demanded. “Because Alexis doesn’t misuse tenses in curse words… no matter how new the language is. So she is upset, and its because of what ever you said. So?” and he waited for a moment before making a ‘Come on’ motion with his hand. “What was it?”

Kane

“Alexis doesn’t curse.” Allison was not Alexis and wouldn’t, with out a lot of effort, repeat verbatim what she had said just because he demanded it. Her memory didn’t work that way. She also didn’t feel she owed this man an explanation of a conversation she had in private with her daughter. “I told her she should be more excited about all this. I had to explain to her that a proposal is not something a person does on a whim.” She moved and sat back on the couch and waved toward it with a hand, a silent invitation to sit as well. There was no doubt in her mind that he loved her daughter, but understanding and living with Alexis was…well, different to be nice about it. “It’s a big deal, not a fleeting conversation or a social experiment. It is a long term commitment that will change her life.”

Allison

Kane ignored the invitation and crosse his arms on his chest. “So… you told her how she should feel. How she should be acting. How she should be reacting. And how she should view her own f^<king wedding. Huh… wonder how that could ever be taken the wrong way.” and he moved to stand near Allison, looming slightly over her.

Allison pushed back into the cushions to give her more space between her and Kane and to try and meet him eye to eye. That was a daunting task; however, he was defending Alexis, and it was SOOOO sweet, Allison couldn’t be mad.

“Lady,” he said through gritted teeth, “… you are a selfish, sanctimonious twit. You have zero right to tell anybody how to feel about anything. Just ‘cause Lex doesn’t react the way you think is ‘normal’ and ‘proper’ doesn’t mean it’s wrong. And you telling her how to do her own damn wedding is garbage. And guess what? This whole thing? It was a whim. Sure, we had talked about it from time to time. But the time-frame? That was just me talking. It was a surprise to her as much a it was to me and you. And thats how we operate. And thats how we will continue to operate,no matter what you want. So rake your PaDD, and your plans, and your ideas, and your pictures, and your gods-be-damned cake… and shove them up your a$$ along with your head.” He spun around and went to the door, yelling over his shoulder “For a mom you sure know not a damn thing about your own kid!” and stepped through the sliding door and into the passageway.

Kane

Allison blinked, well that was uncalled for. She got up and walked to the door. “Kane will you please come back in here so we can talk. I may not see eye-to-eye with my daughter or always understand her, but I do love her. I have no doubt that you do too.”

Allison

Kane stopped and turned and looked at her. “Do you? Do you really? Because all I’ve really seen from you is criticism and correction. But I still haven’t seen understanding.” He moved past her and walked back into the room, but didn’t sit.

Kane

Allison sighed and stepped away from the door. He didn’t sit and the idea of him looming over her again changed her mind about sitting herself. “Yes I do. And no I don’t really understand her. I have tried, but I can’t seem to find a way to view things, to think about things the way she does. And that’s the problem. She can’t either. She needs to be reminded. It’s not that Alexis doesn’t have feelings, but she doesn’t express them, they take a back seat to everything. She forgets for days, even weeks, at a time that there are other people around her. It’s why they made her get Frigga. To help make her be around other people, to pay attention to something other than her work and experiments. You aren’t a puzzle or experiment, you’re going to be her husband. You don’t deserve to be ignored for days or weeks at a time.”

Allison

Kane, for one of a handful of times in his entire existence in this or any other universe, was speechless. He stared at Allison with a mixture of shock and absolute hatred for several very long moments before he took an extremely deep breath and exhaled slowly over almost twenty seconds.

“Now you listen here…”he began, his voice an almost literal growl of anger and animosity, “… if you ever, and I mean ever, so much as think that you know how Lex and I get along and interact, you damn well better stop and take yourself to whatever stupid, idealized view of the world you live in and not say a word about it. She isn’t the $@#king problem… you are. You try to push her into your view of how she should be, but you don’t just accept her for how she is. And she feels things more deeply than you can even possibly grasp. Probably because she isn’t a superficial %$$hole. Literally everything she does is to help others. EVERYTHING. The fact that you can’t grasp that tells me more about you than you probably want. And she has never… not once… ignored me or forgotten about me. Ever. And the fact that you think she would tells me that you have zero faith in her. That because she doesn’t fit in your box of ‘how things should be’ she is somehow flawed. And she’s not. She is exceptional. She is perfect. And how she came outta you I am really amazed, because she is incredible and you…” and he just shook his head and said “Lady, you suck.” He turned slowly and moved to the door, stopping just as it slid open.

On the triage deck Alexis rubbed at her ear like it itched. It sounded like static at first and then a low rumble that actually made her ear itch. Solomon was angry. Well there were better words to describe it, but that was good enough for now. In to the ear piece, “Solomon what’s wrong? It’s not that d@m^ counselor again is it?”

“Oh, and she does express her emotions. A lot. But only to the people she trusts and you have to listen. Maybe you should think about that. You have time. You aren’t wedding planning anymore. We’ll get married when we damn well feel like it and we’ll let you know after its done.” and he stepped through and let the door slide closed behind him.

On the other side of the door Allison dropped into a chair and stared, dumb struck at the door Kane had exited out of. She didn’t like the implications of his words or that Kane after only a few months could possibly know her daughter better than she did.

As he stepped on the lift, he tapped his commbadge. =/\= Lieutenant Commander Kane to Anthony Bonner. You need to grip on your spouse before she says anything to anyone else. And she’s lucky your cabin doesn’t have a damn airlock or a window big enough to push her out of. Kane out. =/\=

Kane

Anthony did not like the sound of that. He wanted to laugh it off as the same jerkiness that made Kane come up with the beetles and geckos for him. But Anthony knew his wife. He loved her, adored her, would do anything for her, but she and Alexis didn’t get along. Some how, in his gut, he knew whatever this was had to do with Alexis somehow. =/\=I’m going to need a little more detail, so I know exactly how to get a grip on her. Where are you?=/\= He honestly didn’t know if Kane would answer and if not he would have to go find Alexis first.

Anthony

=/\= Going to my office. I would recommend you leave me alone. Lex too. There’s been enough damage done, we don’t need apologist garbage trying to smooth it over. Kane out. =/\= and the comm went dead. Into his earbud, he said “I’m fine. Do your thing, doll. I’ll be in my office. Love ya, Lex.”
