Kane walked behind the desk and reached into the drawer and pulled out a dark green glass bottle and two glasses. He unscrewed the top and poured two fingers of a slightly thick, close white liquid into the glasses. He slid one to Myqian and then sat down.

She took a seat at his desk, leaning back and crossing a leg over her knee. Slipping her fingers around the glass, she pulled it over.

“Yeah. I set off a photon torpedo warhead in the lab. That mess out there was designed to contain the blast so it could be transported out. Worked pretty well. Good thing… me and the shrink were standing right next to it.” and he lifted the glass to Myqian and grinned as he took a small drink, waiting to see the reaction of the ship’s Executive Officer when she was told that he experimented with a live warhead inside the ship and next to crew.

She should be surprised. She really should. But not only was Dira not surprised, she just shook her head. She could spout regulations and getting clearance from her or the Captain for anything that result in danger to personnel or property, but Kane existed in a strange realm that had nothing to do with his universal origins. So with a sigh, Myqian took a generous sip of the drink, which was quite potent. “You’re just trying to give me reasons to drink, aren’t you?”

Kane looked at her and laughed loudly. “Naw, I’m just sc£€wing with you. That whole torpedo thing was a hologram. I was f^<king with the shrink. The burn mark is where I didn’t have the power relays calibrated quite right and there was an arc across the system.” and he took a sip. “I mean really. C’mon. You think If be stupid enough to experiment with live ordinance inside the ship? That’d just be irresponsible as hell.”

She went to take another sip and had to pause to assess how the first made her feel. Bloody hell. Ah well, she could be off duty for while if needed. “You.. stupid? Nah, never. But over the years I’ve seen some interesting things. Crap happens.” Normally she’d have known instantly he was messing with her. And he was probably assuming she’d naturally know as well. Uggh, this whole things sucked. Bracing herself for another sip of whatever hellish drink he had concocted, Dira sipped a bit more cautiously. It still hit and she winced. She wanted to ask what it was, but there was a part f her that was just trying to go with things for these few days and it told her to just accept what he drink he offered and see what happened.

“Did you learn anything interesting from your little experiment?”

“Yeah. Your CoP has no sense of self preservation.” and he laughed and then waved off the comment. “I think I found a way to create a stabilized energy field that will allow Engineering to energize circuits, relays, and couplings remotely… no need to crawl through the guts to connect power. That-” and he jwrked his head towards the creation he had been under when she arrived, “- is a prototype. I’ll have to miniaturize the hardware, and at the scale they’ll need they’ll only be able to do a single segment at a time… maybe two. But with small ones of that all over, they could- theoretically- just flip a switch and BAM… power in the circuit.”

Dira nodded slowly. “I think Oscar will be intrigued with the whole thing. You’ll have to let me know how the next stage go. . I can prepare for more alarms too,” she deadpanned before taking another sip.

“You know, just something to think about… what you saw as a lack of self-preservation might actually have been a measure of trust, or at least an attempt at it.”

Myqian eyed the drink. “How much of this do you figure I can drink before I need to nap the rest of the day?”
