The nice thing about her variable duties and not being on bridge currently just now was that Dira could move about as needed without having to worry about having someone to spell her off. So when the notification of the alarm in one of the labs went off very briefly, of course she stopped to check the system only to find out that Kane has disabled the alarm. Not a big deal. She trusted him to handle the situation and since she didn’t know what was going on down there and GALEN didn’t inform her of a larger emergency, Dira allowed herself to finish working on yet another of the endless stream of reports that came with the change in uniform colour and the extra pip. Lucky her.

Well and truly done with staring at a screen, Myqian left her office and made her way to Deck 8A. Stepping off the turbolift, Dira say Kane standing moving near his office and she called out, “You’re not trying to redecorate or rearrange the deck or anything are you?” The last time they had talked outside of meeting, she had been honest to goodness wreck and he tidied her quarters. The whole thing was still strange to her and yet between that and her confessions to Kane before in his quarters about her past issues with Intelligence, she thought there was something at least friendly between them even if they weren’t going to declare friendship. Some days on this ship she wasn’t sure she could ask for more.

“Bite me.” came an acidic retort from a pair of feet sticking out from under a wholly impressive and somewhat disturbing mechanical concoction of magnets, relays, power conduits, and other various known and unknown gadgets. The entire contraption surrounded a large burn mark on the deck, the deck plating scorched and warped in a few places. “I tell ya… that Head Shrink is an absolute piece of… we’ll go with ‘work’, seeing as I’m in mixed company.” growled the Chief Science Officer from where he lay on the deck working on something near the base of the machine.

Despite the comical sight, Myqian knew all too well by his tone (if not his words) that chuckling just now would be a serious error in judgement. “Hmmm, personal or professional clashing?” she asked as she crouched near him but gave enough distance to hopefully be out of the way. Her question was a practical one. One she had a say in, the other she did not most likely. Though she could offer advice if desired. She doubted he’d want it but it didn’t mean she couldn’t if asked.

“Probably both.” Kane said and then slid out from under the device. Standing up, he made some notes on a PaDD and said without looking up “They really have no sense of confidentiality. Came in here broadcasting about my prior living conditions without a thought to else might be in here. And when I first went to see her.. like I’m supposed to… and she had that damned automated receptionist tell me that I wasn’t ‘calm’ enough to see the shrink. How the f#<k is she supposed to deal with people if they can’t come to the Counselor without being in a good mood?!” and threw the PaDD across the device, into a wall, where it bounced off and fell on a table. Kane then looked at Myqian and said “And I don’t appreciate her allowing her fake receptionist referring to me as ‘this kind of patient’ and threatening me with being restrained and having security come get me.” He pulled back his hair and tapped his ear. Inside, just barely visible even with him tapping it, was some kind of hearing device. “Made these for me and Bonner. Let’s us subvocalize speech and acts as an audio amplifier. Hate whispering… drives me up the wall. Plus, helps in my other duties as well.”

“I’m sure it does,” Myqian said rising to her feet. Her eyes traced the path the padd took and where it landed. “Well, my first inclination is to suggest you address the issue with her directly. But short of that, we have an entire department of people qualified to do sessions. The security clearance for yours might be an obstacle for some, but you are well within your right to request a different therapist. Not every practitioner is a good fit for every patient. If you can’t build trust, it’s a waste of both your time.” At least this area she could speak with from experience both as a former therapist herself and as the first officer.

“But let me also say that all health professionals have to feel safe. I’m not talking moods here. Aggression can put people on edge. If you both got off on the wrong foot, it might take some work on both your parts to find some middle ground. If you can.” Dira shrugged. “But like I said, there are options if you can’t or choose not to.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane looked at her and for perhaps the first time, he wasn’t glaring. He just… looked. “You were a shrink. You tell me how that kinda of first encounter is supposed to build trust. And the last time I checked… it wasn’t my job to make her comfortable. Its her job to make a space where I can feel secure telling her all the weird and crappy s#!t that has been my life. Telling me to calm down or else before we even spoke? Yeah… that’s the same crap attitude the ones that threw me in the hole to begin with gave me. And that was enough. It ain’t happening again.” and he turned and walked toward his office. “You up for a drink, Commander?” he yelled over his shoulder.
