Solal thought back and nodded. “Academy instructors make it a point to tell students, at multiple points throughout the courses, that if one is here looking for glory and excitement, they will be sorely disappointed. Not to mention ‘excitement’ means someone dying, perhaps someone you know. There were no illusions of grandeur.” His accent came out a little harder on the French loan word, mangling the ‘r’. “If one does not enjoy the mundane, in our field the routine physicals, the belly aches, the arthritis, and ‘man flu’s as it seems to be called, then they have no business as a doctor, they will not enjoy the job.” His parents had told him that once, when he was in medical school. “The ‘boring’ makes up ninety percent of our job - if not more.” He put quotes around boring, it was such a human concept. As if they had invented a word for ‘lacking too much in excitement to be worth doing’.

Dira knew so many examples to contrary of people who, even despite the training, had an ideal career in their mind. One in particular made her pause and take a sip. A casual gesture to mask an uncomfortable memory. “I think that is definitely true for some. But not all. And besides, gossip is a very natural occurrence amongst many species. Not all individuals, no, but how information moves through a community can tell you interesting things about it. So long as it’s harmless of course. But therein lies the issue and where it becomes a problem.” She shrugged slightly. “It’ll always be around, we just have to find ways of navigating it.”
Commander Myqian, XO
“Gossip is normally occurring,” she conceded, In fact Eshin Jolly , and Luke J. Change published a well known study, Gossip drives vicarious learning and facilitates social connection that supports its importance. The study is only based on humans however and can not be said to apply to other species. However I find it detrimental to performance for the medical staff to engage in gossip sessions on duty. They spend more time on that than their duties when it’s allowed. I prefer for them to engage in such…” she almost said ‘nonsense’, “social interactions off duty.”

Myqian sipped on her drink, finishing it off. “Oh, I don’t disagree actually. There are times and places for things especially, if as you say, it’s affecting people’s work. The trick I think is figuring out what is normal social interaction on duty and which is crossing the line. Sometimes it can be a bit finer than we like.” In Dira’s experience, people formed connections with their team through casual conversation and the discovery of shared interests. But gossiping about the captain while she was there was certainly not productive.

Alexis knew that was true. Her father often talked to her as she grew up about how parts of her life could blend and overlap. She saw it, she just didn’t like it. When she worked she did not want to be distracted by such frivolous things. “Well we know that most people do not agree with the hard clear line of my on duty work ethic. They find it too strict.” That was not a jab at the XO and their disagreement. Alexis was sure she could sense that (not aware of telepathic suppressor), but the matter of fact way she said it would give that away as well. It was simply something Alexis had learned over the years. No one was quite as driven and focused as she was. The frantic need and necessity to work to keep her brain fed and occupied. Not to mention that Soulis and Ever taught her a cruel lesson about the need to keep work strictly work. Though Solomon was having quite a bit of success in helping her have balance in her life.
Bonner, AMO
Dira nodded. “There’s nothing wrong with a strong work ethic and the lines drawn around it. In practice though, people are messy, whether it’s convenient or not. An every situation is different. I think we will keep an eye on the gossip issue and steer it in a better direction where needed.”
Solal nodded and then shrugged. He might be the only person to AGREE with alexis’ work ethic, and it was because he was a Vulcan, trying to follow the teachings of Surak. Logic left no room for inefficiencies such as idle gossip.
Finishing her drink, she smiled at the pair. “Well, I won’t disturb you any longer and let you have the rest of your break.” She reached down to pet Frigga’s head, both grateful for the canine’s intervention and weirded out that it was necessary. That feeling of being off, unbalanced, had not dissipated and she doubted it would for a couple more days.
Frigga lolled her tongue over the attention and then shook when it ended. “Have a pleasant evening, Cmdr.” Alexis was glad to be done with the conversation. She still felt awkward around the Cmdr and was glad the conversation went without snags, but also the topic was one that Alexis would never see eye to eye on and would prefer to ‘agree to diagree’ and drop the topic.
Rising, Myqian gave them a bow of her head, and slipped away to return her glass to the bar. She had been social and tested out her lack of abilities in a different setting. So much right now was about gathering more data and then her and Surra would pick it apart in analysis.

Solal nodded to her and then Alexis. “I will return to my quarters as well. I look forward to seeing you on duty.” He said, and then he headed off to his own quarters.

“I need to get back as well. Good evening Dr Solal.” She stood and Frigga trotted along beside her on the way to their next appointments.
