Kane took a bite and said “I’m game. Y’all are here for two weeks, right? Plenty of time to swing a wedding.” around the bite. He chewed a second and then said “Wow, this is amazing.” as if the first part of his words had never happened.

“W....” she gasped stunned and then Alexis choked and whatever she was going to say was lost in the coughing. Alisson nodded, “Two weeks.” Then beamed, “Thank you. It’s one of Alexis’ favorites.” Anthony was watching Alexis expecting her to get up and disappear into a lab. Instead she was staring at Kane. It was that look she got every time he pushed her to the edge of her comfort zone. It would have always been that way, Kane would just walk in and go “Let’s go hurry up.” or it would be a picture he’d drawn…and then it would happen.

Kane didn’t look at her, he simply ate another bite and said “How do you layer in the peppermint so evenly, Alisson? I mean, every bite has almost the exact same amount of peppermint. That’s a trick.”

“Actually that’s partially Alexis. She was…” she looked at Anthony, “What 3?”

He nodded, “Yeah 3 sounds right.”

Alexis finally managed to stop coughing and staring at him like he had the third eye this time. Baby stories, they were telling baby stories. “I was 3 years, 4 months, and 1 day to be exact.”

“She was complaining that there wasn’t peppermint in each of her bites. And swore we could make it better. So I let her help me. At some point Anthony got dragged into it and showed her how to set up an experiment and test it and change it. And after about 15 batches she was happy.”

“And a lot of mess, don’t forget the mess,” Anthony added.

The mess has been horrendous, “I was right they were better.”

“But…the evenness of the layers is simple. After you pour each layer you chill the pan and batter half an hour so it firms and the layers don’t mix. Takes extra prep time, but it’s worth it.”

Kane nodded and finished his brownie. He then finished his bourbon and leaned back. “So did Lex tell you how we met? Actually, did she tell you anything,that prepared you for, well… all of this?” he asked, gesturing at himself and her.
