The next episode was about fortune telling and using a deck of cards to do so. Alexis found it preposterous and poor Lucy was convinced it was real. Though Alexis supposed she could sympathize with Lucy. She could vividly remember a card game messing with her own equilibrium. She had a sketch to remind her of it too. She leaned into him bumping his shoulder a bit. “You still haven’t shown me how to do that card trick, and I’ve given you plenty of dinners.”

Without taking his eyes off the screen, Kane grinned and his eyes sparkled under the hair across his face. “A magician never gives up his secrets, Lex. Besides…” and he turned and looked at her, “… you are the single smartest person on this ship. Surely you figured it out by now.” and he leaned forward and gave her a not-so-quick kiss before turning back to Lucy.

Kane

Alexis smiled, her cheeks turning slightly pink at the compliment. She started to say something but was stopped when he kissed her. She settled back, with her head against his shoulder to watch. She reached over and laced her fingers though his, she still liked holding his hand.

When it was over, “I asked you, ‘Will you teach me how to shuffle the cards like that?’ and you said, ‘I’ll teach you if you agree to have dinner with me again.’ I agreed, but things....didn’t go like they were supposed to, but I’ve had several dinners with you to make up for it. So time to pay up, Kane. And yes I could have figured it out by now, but the point was to spend time with you, not alone by myself.” She tipped her head back on his shoulder to look up at him and grinned.

Bonner

Kane thought for a moment and then he smiled. “Well, what I said was I would teach you if you would have dinner with me again. Grammatically, that isn’t numerically specific. So… maybe you owe me a few more dinners. You know… just be sure.” and he looked at her an grinned.

Kane

Alexis eyes danced at him, “Actually what you said was you would teach me if I agreed to have dinner again. You never said I actually had to show up. So maybe I’ve over paid my debt, to ensure you can be sure, and you’re greedy.”

Bonner

“Only when it comes to you and whiskey.” he replied softly and brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face. “Of course, if you want your debt to be considered paid in full, I guess we could. I mean, I’d hate for you to think I was trying to get one over on you.”

Kane

When Solomon said things like that it made her feel funny, but in a good way. She didn’t think about it…too much, she didn’t really want to. She wasn’t sure she’d ever admit it, to anyone else, but she liked the way he helped her slow her mind down and just be. Her smile turned soft as she stared back at him. “Just me and whiskey? I think I’m okay with that. I didn’t say I wanted it considered paid in full, I just want you to remember I’m still paying and you still owe me.” The truth was Alexis would enjoy Solomon showing her how he drew the cards like that, and she could figure it out on her own, but she preferred not knowing. Her hand was idly tracing the eagle tattoo on his arm. “You are the only person I don’t think is trying to get one over on me.” He teased her a lot, but it never bothered her or made her worry.

Kane smiled and said “You know… I’m supposed to be the pessimist in this dynamic. And trust me when I say… most people aren’t trying to manipulate you. Most people don’t even think that far ahead. Try and keep that in mind.” and he kissed her softly. “Oh, and if anyone tries to? You let me know. We’ll deal with them the way we dealt with the last guy who thought he was smarter than us.” and he winked.

Kane

Us It was a simple little word that changed Alexis’ whole perspective. It wasn’t her by herself, or Solomon trying to fix things for her, but together, a team. Just like he said it would be. Her voice was really soft as she stared back at him through the fall of his hair, her thumb rubbing over the compass rose on his palm. “Promise. I’ll tell you if anyone does.” Then she grinned at him her voice very matter-of-fact, “Actually I don’t think about most people and if they are trying to manipulate me. I don’t know how to play that game. They aren’t fascinating enough to get my attention, so I don’t think about it. You on the other hand, capture all of my attention. I never considered you might manipulate me, so I never worried about it.”

She raised up a little bit, moving closer, and settled on his lap, her arms around his shoulders. “You, Solomon Kane, are not a pessimist. You want people to think you are, but you are not. You are a ‘realist’. You prepare for the worst but you look for the good in people and in situations. Otherwise you never would have let me apologize that first night in the lounge, and you certainly wouldn’t have joined the NDFD. But don’t worry I’m not going to tell.” She pressed close, kissing him warmly.

Kane kissed her back, and was quite enjoying the moment…

Until a thought occurred to him.

Groaning slightly, he pulled back from her kiss and scowled. “NDFD… dammit. We got a new Psychiatric Chief. Aww, f&<k.” and he leaned back and exhaled slowly.

Kane

Alexis looked at him with confusion and concern as he pulled away with a groan, until he spoke. She kissed him along his jaw, once and then just leaned into him, hugging him. Solomon hated those appointments and she didn’t see why he needed to go so often. Alexis didn’t particularly like going, but that was because talking ‘about her feelings’ always was confusing and odd to her. She’d rather talk about her latest experiments. She imagined it was overly a pain in the @$$ for Solomon. Considering what he could and could not talk about paired with what he was willing to talk about. She didn’t know of a way to help him. It wasn’t like her being his doctor because she knew how much he hated being worked on. Psychology was a subject Alexis didn’t think she would ever master. She also really didn’t think they would let her go with him, not that he needed her there.

“Take Frigga. She works down there enough. She’ll enjoy getting to go with you, and it will confuse the hell out of them when they agitate her and you don’t.”

At the mention of her name, the dog moved close to the two of them and Kane reached down and scratched her behind her right ear. “I wouldn’t do that to you, now would I?” he said softly and then his jaw clenched again. “See? We treat dogs better than we treat people. Ugh…” and he shook the thoughts from his head and relaxed slightly. “Its just such a pain in the ass. Every time we get a new Head Shrink, I gotta go through the ‘Let’s see if Kane is crazy from his trip.’ schtick. Its just f#&king tedious.” he said and then smiled slightly. “But this episode of Lucy is great. Maybe I’ll just quote lines from the show at ‘em the whole time I’m there.” and he chuckled.
