She had wandered, doing her usual rounds, though they took place at different times of the day and she changed up her routine so that it didn’t become monotonous. Dira enjoyed strolling the ship, passing crew members and saying hello, or just giving a nod of acknowledgement. This part she had imagined in her head as early as her Command training. She had pictured walking the corridors of her a ship she was the first officer for, knowing that she had worked hard to get to this point. She deserved the trust placed in her.It had all come true, and some days it surprised her; not the fact that she was an XO but that the feeling was exactly as she thought it would be. Every once in awhile her brown fingers would reach out and brush the walls, reminding her that this magnificent structure held within it all the ingredients to support life. What a wonder!
This evening was no different. She had started in the Secondary Hull. The engineers getting used to her random appearances where she said nothing, just passing through their space with ease. Myqian poked her head into Secondary Sickbay briefly, noting that everything was as it should be. Quiet for this time of night.
She couldn’t sleep. Or rather, hadn’t been able to convince her body that it was now sleep time, despite it being well after 2300 hours. Ah well, the extra pips often came with more reports to fill out and a sometimes unhealthy bouts of insomnia.
Dira knew that she was still working through events triggering her, and the intensity of their mission left her mind tired after so much processing. People were on edge much more than usual, and having been through the Dominion War, she understood that as long as this bout was temporary, it was fine. If it persisted, then she’d have a problem.
Going up to Deck 9A on the primary hull, she smiled as she remembered that one of her favourite places was on this deck: the Arboretum. So long as she avoided that shoe-eating plant, it might just be the distraction she needed.

As the Commander was walking to the entrance, an Engineering NE was walking into the room, muttering.
“‘The humidity level controls are wrong, so go check them manually and fix them,’ says the new boss,” she muttered, with her impersonation sounding vaguely grumpy and Spanish, although her own inflection was clearly that of a Federation colony upbringing. “Two tricorders and a PADD to do a job that could probably be done remotely. I swear, he’s giving us all grunt work just to make us know who’s in charge.”
She stomped into the room, unaware that anyone had overheard her. Funnily enough, her “boss” would have found the attitude to be to his liking.
- NE Phyllis, Engineering
Dira couldn’t help but smirk a little knowing all too well that Oscar was an acquired taste. But he was a damned good engineer and she was confident the department would work itself out. She thought about following the NE in but decided that maybe they were best figuring it out for themselves. Not everyone needed the XO jumping it at the first sign of grumbling.
So instead, she waited a few moments before entering, noting how strange it still was that she couldn’t sense anyone right now. She knew it was needed, to give her mind a break, but still it was genuinely bizarre!

The Arboretum was filled with trails and nooks and crannies. The perception of privacy was easy to have given the coverage from the foliage that surrounded these areas. The garden designer thought they could be used to give people a sense of intimacy, but for his purposes, he wanted more. Dira had gotten away from him and it had taken him far too long to get approval for his “sabbatical” for his liking. A day without her was like agony and yet… his light brown eyes flashed with anger… she had given him up. She had led a mutiny, spurred by that Engineer. She had fallen for his lies. It had cost him so much though not as much as the Engineer probably liked. Bill smirked as he watched her through a massive gardenia bush. He craved every sight of her, but it was obvious his attempts to reach her telepathically had been unsuccessful.
Why? He did not know. He had waited patiently for her to start exhibiting symptoms of anxiety but his mental whispers never seemed to have an effect. He ground his teeth. Well, there were other ways. He just knew if she saw him, she would realize the mistake she made.
It was time to move. She would be walking this path towards the exit and he needed to get there before her. The chase was on and she didn’t even know it.
Commander William Franks
Doing a round, and humming to herself, Dira mused that it was time to subject her crew to what Bob used to call her ‘musical moods’. As much as he teased her, she liked singing and wasn’t easily embarrassed. But so far with this ship she hadn’t done anything publicly like that at all and she was questioning why. It was definitely worth some self-reflection. Or more reflection, since after all, she had been doing a rather lot of it lately.
With a sigh, she concluded her lap and headed for the exit.
Commander Myqian, XO
The path he was on led him straight to the exit but made him only visible at the last moment, as the doors opened to let him go through them. He paused ever so briefly, timing it just right so that Dira would be able to get enough of a glimpse of his profile to make her wonder if she was seeing things or if she had in fact seen him. The confusion it would cause was delicious to his mind. Let her second guess herself. She knew there could be no way William Franks was here without her knowing, and yet…
His smirk returned as he walked through the exit and then he sped up. He needed to be down the corridor and ready for her to exit. Once she did, she would only get a glimpse of him turning down another corridor. Let her follow him just barely. It took timing, but he knew what he was listening for.
